Something is off with this.

The original post on Nov 26 at 9am said it was one day only and Groupon indicated the same. In fact, when I looked yesterday, I could have sworn it said "19 of 25 have sold" and that they needed to sell 25 for the 50% off (which is typically how Groupon works).

So why is it still for sale for another 7 hours and is it even remotely possible that they've sold 240? That just doesn't seem likely to me.

Anyone else looking at this with a sideways tilted head and going "huh?"?

I'm not sure why a business would do this. It seems to be a money losing venture.

Supposedly, Groupon takes 50% right off the top. Therefore, $249 becomes a net of $124.50, less HST, so $111 to the shop.

PADI charges the shop for the Crewpack and PIC, so subtract that expense (no idea how much), but lets say $80, which leaves $31.

Initially that seems to be alright, but you haven't paid your instructors or DMs yet.

Once you've paid to teach the students, I can't see how you'd have anything left over other than red ink.

Sure, there will be some people who don't take the class, but if I couldn't, I'd find a reason to get my money back or transfer it to someone else, etc. All you have to do is answer YES on any of the medical questions and you get a refund.

And there will certainly be those students that buy gear, take another class, etc., but the economics of the deal still don't make sense to me.

I'm quite intrigued by this and of course am completely speculating/hypothesizing. It sounds like a great deal for the customer and I hope the shop has an ace up their sleeve to make it profitable for them, otherwise, we may be attending a going-out-of-business sale and getting even better deals.

gotta spend money to make money.
I absolutely love GPD.. but I've never seen it busy since I started going about 6 months ago.
I assume the groupon is to help the business out, get more people around surrey doing some diving. Therefore they can get back in line with rentals, equipment purchases, fills, trips, all that sort of stuff.

Todd is absolutely right, it's a huge risk if it works out.
I know wayyyy too many people that have their OW's and aside from their 4th ocean dive.. have yet to be diving.

Padi might be doing something with GPD to discount crewpacks for this or something, but yeah it's insane. Gotta be a catch somehow, or they're just hoping enough people'll convert into gear sales.

It might also be e-learning only, in which case you have to pay padi separately and this just ends up being a referral but it looks like you can do the courses there at no extra charge.

Someone asked that in the discussion thread and they said e-learning is an extra charge and the customer would pay PADI $120 directly.

Yeah, that's not surprising. Padi shops treat e-learning customers as referral dives... Basically you show up to the pool and they teach the hands on stuff, you're supposed to be ready for the other stuff.

I did my OW with e-learning
you print out your reviews
dive shop will give you the exam
do your pool dives
do your ocean dives.
