The Transpac back and waist padding is removable. I took my padding off years ago. It's not needed. Plus it adds weight and buoyancy. Maybe fnfalman removed his too.

I just did my 1st dive with a BPW. I still like my Transpac, but the stability and ease of the BPW harness is an improvement over the Transpac.

When I get a chance I'm going to weigh them and post the results. I'm guessing the weight will be close, but won't mind if I am wrong.

Nope. They're still there.

Since that I don't hump my gears up and down mountain trails to get to a dive spot, I think that I will remove them.

I do like the stability of the hard plate, but I do like my Transpac for travel.

Fully loaded with tank & regulator/computer, there's a 2-lbs difference between my Dive Rite Transplate and Transpac with the Transpac being 2-lbs lighter. At least that's what my bathroom weightscale says.

What happened to your Halcyon BP/wing/Atomic SSI rig?

It's there. A man doesn't dive by the Blue H alone.

Take your transpac, put it in a mesh bag in the water, start adding lead to the bag until it sinks. I guarantee you it will take a few pounds. Padding floats, dude.

Whatever, dude.

My dive weights don't lie.

We just dove with a fellow who was using a TransPac, and we were helping him with his weighting. It took 3 lbs to sink the Transpac. That alone would be enough reason for me to go with a lightweight plate itself. We use Tobin's Kydex ones for travel. (For those of you using doubles, the advantage of the Kydex plate is that, if you rent tanks with short bolts, you can flex the plate enough to get the wing nuts on. You can't do that with a metal plate. Ask me how I know this :) )

Yes, my experience was between 3 & 4lb's to sink my TP. It was one of the main reasons I moved on.

OK. Using my bathroom scale. Weighed myself, then wearing the Transpac w/Travelwing and then wearing an aluminum BP with Oxycheq Mach V 30lb wing. Full harness on both, 2 cam bands, crotch strap, standard d-rings. I don't wear padding on my Transpac except on the shoulders because they are sewn on.

Transpac: 6lbs
Aluminum BPW: 7 lbs.

Getting back on point of this whole thread. I can mount my Oxy wing to the Transpac using sexbolts. Then run the cam bands through the wing, but not the Transpac because the cam band spacing doesn't line up. Transpac has several mounting holes so I think a DSS wing will mount too, but not sure if cam bands are attached to a DSS wing.

Edit: you can mount an oxycheq to the Transpac, but it will not dive stable.

If you want a soft plate, Transpac will work fine. If you want hard plate, get a Kydex or aluminum plate. Weight difference between them ? Like splitting hairs.

I can believe the Transpac with all it's padding attached is buoyant. Remove the padding. When water temps get to 80 or above, I dive with a rash guard, no weight with my Transpac.

Just for interest, what do the rigs weigh, sans the tanks & lead?

Well, each to their own, but I wouldn't care for that myself. Too much stress on the wings centre panel at 2 small points where the sex bolts attach to the soft pack. Plus, I'm not too sure how stable the tank would be.

Very good points. Now that I think about it, what I wrote is not a good idea. Yes you can mount it, but it won't be secure. Thanks for pointing it out.

On a side note. I've given my Transpac to my wife. She wants the padding.

Thanks everyone for the various comments. A lot to think about.

When I dive warm and wet with an AL80 and my steel plate with no exposure suit, I need about 2# of lead in salt water, so I really don't need the weight of the steel back plate for that configuration. I really just want to save the weight and space for travel. If I had softer webbing on my plate and Scubapro style cam bands, then my plate would take up less room. A Kydex plate would fix the travel weight issue. I love the stability and design of my DSS system.
