I don't have a DR dealer near me. I have DSS Torus 26# and 17# lift wings. I want to get a DR Transpac for Caribbean travel. Do I have to buy a DR wing or can I use one of my DSS Wing with the Transpac?

Wings have standard fittings, or at least all those I've seen have. You can use a wing from any manufacturer.

All wings don't have standard fittings.

To answer your question it's my understanding that DSS wings can work with a standard backplate or a transpac in this case by attaching it with just the cam bands. You won't be able to bolt it to the transpac because their wings are designed to be used with their backplates but you can still use it.

A TP has cam band spacing of about 6". DSS "T" wings have a centre panel thats about 3" wide. Most of the tanks you'll use are about 7" to 8" in diameter. If you try this you'll find it imposable to tighten the cam bands tight enough to hold the tank securely, or you'll rip the centre panel of the wing apart if you can apply enough pressure.

I'm not recommending this, but I'v been told that you can use an STA to obviate the problem.

OK, marginal manufacturers like DSS may choose to be different, but I've sold and used harnesses/backplates/wings from most of the major manufacturers for years and I've never come across a non-standard fitting. They will vary with size, which is why the standard arrangement allows for several alternative attachment points.

You'll find the same problem trying to atach an Oxycheq singles wing to a TP.

Maybe so. I'm not familiar with all the new companies that have sprung up in recent years, though of course I've heard of them and sometimes see their products. I don't know why they've found it necessary to change from a universal mounting system to one that is designed only to suit their own gear. Though thinking about it I'm not that surprised after all :D

Both Oxy & DSS wings will fit all hard plates either directly via cam bands, or by the expedient of an STA. Soft pacs like the TP are the only time it's a problem, & as I'v said, you can use an STA if you like. Although a little ingenuity may be required to not have wing nuts digging into your back.

Just FYI dmendelson, a DSS Kydex plate is a lot lighter than a TP. In fact, a DSS SS plate isn't that much different in weight to a TP.

I would agree with Kern that you should consider the DSS kydex plate. It's MUCH lighter and more compact for travel, and personally I would far prefer to dive with one.

The transpac is a strange device; it was designed specifically for long shore entries.
