Not sure if this is the right forum for this question.

Are PADI and NAUI like the Capulets and Montagues at the professional level? More specifically, if you have a PADI instructor and a NAUI DM, are they effectively a PADI instructor and a random rescue diver on an instructional dive?

Also, is there somewhere to find information like this on the web (without being in one of their courses)? I haven't been able to find PADI instructional standards like I have for GUE and TDI.

Cheers.

Padi has "certifed assistants" any other agency member with a professional rating does not qualify as a certified assistant as far as I know. I'm sure all the other agencies are the same too.

Bottom line is that the instructor needs to follow the standards set by their agency.

Some agencies have their standards published on the web- most don't but they would be happy to sell you a copy. :D

Correct. Specifically:
A certified assistant is a Teaching Status PADI Instructor, PADI
Assistant Instructor or Active Status PADI Divemaster.

That sort of bothers me really. I'm not sure how anyone can make the decision to become a dive professional without first being able to determine if he or she is even interested in being associated with a particular agency.

Yes, but not the other way around. Most agencies restrict assistants to those certified as assistants within that same agency. NAUI allows their instructors to use assistants certified through other agencies.

Are there any other agencies that have the same standards as NAUI for certified assistants? SDI? CMAS? SEI? for example.

None of which I'm aware. I am not an expert in the standards of all agencies. SEI assistants must be SEI certified.

Written standards will not help with that decision much. What matters is how those standards are understood and applied.

One big reason people should be encouraged to take non-professional courses with a variety of agencies is precisely to see that there is more than one way to approach diving education.

I suppose I just like to have as much information as possible. In the context of this thread though, it seems that if I were looking to become a working divemaster, I should absolutely do it through PADI, even if I hated the PADI instructor and loved the NAUI instructor. Unlike recreational courses where the value is tied up in the education rather than in the card, the utility of a professional certification is really in what the certification itself allows you to do. This decision would be something that's sort of counterintuitive to me, and this question isn't really something that would have occurred to me unless I'd skimmed through the standards or had two instructor friends from different agencies complaining about not being able to find divemasters.
