If your home savings are an isue and you can't really afford it then why do the trip? And if dolphin dive encounters were really the priority then maybe you should have skipped the 5 star cruise ship accomodations with only hours in each destination and stayed someplace that offered what you really wanted. Like i and others mentioned, You spend the big bucks on a cruise and then complain about locals, Just ain't gonna cut it bubba

Complain about what locals? No idea what you're talking about. The crux of this thread is about how the cruise lines jack **** up. If you read serious reviews from serious cruise go-ers, people normally tell you to bypass the cruise lines when booking excursions. A good example is cave-tubing.com. They have more to offer for less $. Starting to think you work for Carnival or something.

Big bucks on the cruise? The cruise is the cheap part lol, not sure if you have cruised before.

Their advertised cost is $110 for guest, $137 for VISITORS...key word here VISITORS.

From your first ever post it seemed you were bothered AKR was charging you cruise ship prices. I think thats what we all read into it and maybe, just maybe, what you tried to imply until you realized how silly it was. NOW that you know it is the cruise industry causing your dilema maybe you can get a refund and just do a landbased trip or head on over to cruise critic dot com and complain over there with the other cruise folks that are not really big into diving.

I have no Idea why you bring cave tubing into it, There is no cave tubing on Roatan, Again, Maybe you need a cruise forum rather than a dive forum.

I'd do the dive however you pay for it. The first part of the snorkel is off the beach, the second is in the pens. You can't bring a camera into the pens. And it's only about $25 cheaper - non-resort guest price is $103 pp. The encounter only is a lot cheaper but what sort of shots will you get off the beach?

My buddy has an epic shot of one of the dolphins posing just off the sandy bottom. Perfectly in focus, exposed and lit (he got lucky with his P&S - even he'll admit that.) The dolphin even sort of looked almost directly at the camera while his body is perpendicular. I doubt you'll get that sort of shot on the encounter.

The afternoon dive is at 1:30. I doubt you can get from Mahogany Bay to AKR for the 8:30 dive. So that should give you time to rent a car and drive around a little first. Drive over to the West End for lunch and a little shopping maybe - it's about 5mins. from there to AKR..

Or if you want to do it by cab, the cab stand for the West End is on Half Moon Bay beach across from Coconut Tree Divers - all week there were cabs there from early morning til late at night. Negotiate with the cab driver(s), I've read prices go up when there's a cruise ship in port.

Plan maybe 2 hours for the dive. You have to pay at the RIMS counter, then walk back to the boats, do a mask clear off the back of the boat, then when everyone is ready you'll go to the Key and meet the dolphins. Takes about 10-15 mins. and it's a five? min ride out to the divesite from there. Unless you want to walk up the hill to the AKR restaurant, you're better off eating in the West End. More choices in all budget ranges.

Sundowners in the West End is a beach bar with burgers/sandwiches etc. Reasonable prices and right on the water. From there going west is at least a couple dozen bars/restaurants within about 1/2 mile. Rotisserie Chicken was another good option slightly farther west. We weren't overly impressed with Bertie's above Coconut Tree Divers - it's the first place you'll likely see. Sundowners is 100 yds. to the east from where the road forks at the beach.

NEVER EVER NEVER IN THE SLIGHTEST ever had the desire, As a diver, the closest I have gotten to a cruise is a liveaboard with 15 or so other people. No way I want to be involved with someone involved in making me happy along with 3000 others.

You feel doing a trained dolphin dive is a better option than just doing a few O/W dives enjoying what Roatan has to offer naturally? Now if we want fake manmade dives then lets not forget there is also a shark feed dive that may not be something to be missed.

Ahh, But we can do a Dolphin encounter in Orlando with trained dolphins for a lot less money. Your really a diver? Seems odd you would suggest this be done at whatever cost or however they pay for it rather than promoting the natuaral things available. Heck, We followed a pod of probably 30 dolphin for miles between Cayos and Roatan. I also cannot recall a trip out of north Florida I have not come across them. Not like a dolphin is rare, only the trained ones.

Yes, I think you 'read into it'. I am not bashing AKR and I am not bashing the cruise line. I just thought it was interesting they offer a visitor price on their site and then tell me that since I am coming from a cruise ship I cannot book directly through them. She offered me no exceptions. So how would this be different than me telling them I am not on a cruise ship. I suppose I will call again tomorrow to find out. Or later today.
