Never been on a Liveaboard where nitrox wasn't included or I hadn't gotten Nitrox negotiated into the base package price - including an Aggressor boat. One of the benefits of using an LDS that does a high-volume of travel. They've got some clout with all the major boats, and are happy to wield it for their customers.
 
Never been on a live-aboard but I have read the owner's of some operations give the crew a big cut of nitrox proceeds in order to increase the probability of keeping the system up and running. I guess you can consider these sums into the crew's tip upon disembarking...:)

Don't see how air could "go away" since there are max depths for levels of nitrox. Those depths are typically near to max rec depth but still limiting for some. I mean how could people do these crazy "I went to 150" on my last dive?! :)
 
Agreed, BUT. It is a way for some liveaboard operators to raise prices without raising the price. Kinda like your airline baggage fee....

huh? where'd you read that ?

I think if a crew member won't pull his weight, the captain (or the other crew) will deal with him. Trust me.


The Liveaboards I dive charge $150 for the week, meaning 5 days real diving, thats $30 a day. Most do 5 dives a day so that's 6 dollars a tank. Seems like a good deal to me.

Every Aggressor I've been on uses membrane for nitrox. That's a hefty initial cost to defray, as well as maintenance.

I agree I'd just as soon have a package price without the "gotcha" costs.

I agree with Doubler that the price broken out per tank is fairly priced (compared to what we pay ala carte at the LDS.)

however, I'm with Fdog that I'd rather have a package price without all the "gotchas". Some liveaboards charged every fee in the world. (Port fee, park fee, security fee, nitrox, fuel surcharge, etc.) It would end up in $200-$400 extra in "fees"

That's probably what I really find annoying. Aggressor claims to be the world leader in liveaboards and to be fair, they do a VERY, VERY good job. I just think it's time for this surcharge to go away. I know it costs them to do Nitrox. I'm not debating that. No way in hell it costs $1600 per WEEK to run it. No way. They could tank in 100% O2 and partial pressure fills for less than that.

huh? Most of the agressor boats are in REMOTE locations.

shipping in O2 (for partial pressure filling) to 'resort islands' ain't cheap.

While I'll agree that it doesn't cost $1,600 per week to do membrane fills most likely, they've got to get some return on their investment of the cost of the purchase of the membrane system, installation (which likely included removing deck plates or cutting a hole the deck and welding it back, generation on "island diesel fuel prices", planning/purchase of a larger generator system to run it, maintenance, labor, liability, etc.


As for partial pressure filling 20 tanks, 5 times a day, on a liveaboard. It's very labor intensive and a 'fuster-cluck' of an operation. Also unless you calculate percentages for "topping off", you end up emptying the tank each time. Which means you vent a LOT of nitrox ($$$) each filling cycle, eating up more o2 in the supply cylinders.

I've been on Liveaboards with membrane systems and ones that did partial pressure filling 5 times a day. I can easily say that watching them have to do it via partial pressure that often per day is crazy and just amount to a cheap boat owner.
