what do you think is the best time of year to visit/dive Roatan?

Like DMoore19 said, take a look around for this oft discussed topic.

In short? March>September is regarded as some of the best "creature concentration" time, but when you're starting out diving, maybe it's best to pick the most perfect possible topside weather, so narrow it down to April>August.

Weather all around the Caribbean (as critter counts) is generally the same for all of our local dive destinations, but the more Southerly locations are "below" the common path of Hurricanes (Think: Bay Islands, San Andres, ABC, Los Roques, Margaritte).

During the Hurricane season which is just beginning, storms usually track NW through our backyard swimming hole, the Mar Caribe. Even though the Southerly islands are below that track, they can suffer from long periods of heavy rains when the storms come through. It is, after all, the rain forest... something which used to be called the jungle.

yes, as he said.... rainy season in Oct-Nov can mean big downpours. We were there in Nov a couple of years ago, so we saw rain almost every day. We were at CCV resort so we still were able to do 4-5 dives per day, though vis was bad a few days. Didn't stop us, we still had a great trip! Some of the dive boats from north side of island were down on southside several days due to rough seas. We heard they cancelled diving with dolphins a couple of days for those rough conditions, also. So, be aware that weather seems to cancel diving on north side of island more so than the south.

Even though I have been to Coz more times that I can count....I will be making my first trip to Roatan tomorrow ! :D

Henry,

Are you trying to add to the discussion, or vent your anger at me. Anyway, I find your entire line of thought to be unpersuasive. Besides, the Aruba tragedy was 5 years ago making it stale. Roatan churns out problems that appear in this forum on a regular basis. No other travel forum on this board has anywhere near the amount of bad news seen here. Too bad all the weak BS in the world will not change the facts.

-Ron & cheers to you.

These pictures you loaded are really interesting.

I am entranced by much the same thing- shapes and colors in nature. Put in some more.

Just revist the link. I added more today, tomorrow is the last day of diving...so after tomorrow afternoon - no more pics :(

Less macro/textures today - had some turtles and larger subjects today.

Ray, I like those brain corals. When in doubt, ask the brain.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

So I've been to Cozumel a few times, and am in Roatan, staying at fibr right now.

We are loving it here.

Hey rayaslin -

Glad to hear you're having such a great time at Fantasy Island. Who are you diving with (what divemaster) and who is your boat captain?

Thanks so much for all the great pics!

...Lastly, please don't stop sharing your stories, your opinions and your experiences!
As for my plans... I think we may be leaning towards CCV over FIBR. ..
Since you are comparing CCV to Cozumel, I'll throw my $.02 in.
I have been to Scuba Club Cozumel (SCC) and CCV and enjoyed both very much.
They are different though. I found that the shore at SCC, though not beautiful was full of critters and we enjoyed our shore diving at Cozumel a lot, maybe even more than the boat dives.
At CCV, I enjoyed the boat dives more. partly because the last boat dive of the day was in essense a one way shore dive.
Believe it or not, I found it easier to shore dive on Cozumel at SCC.
We didn't like the currents that much in Cozumel, sure it's fun drifting along, but that gets old when what we really wanted to do was see creatures up close.

I would go back to both in the future.

SCC was a great deal.. cheaper and easier to get to. We walked into town shopping and dining several evenings after diving. You feel a lot more freedom at SCC than at CCV.

The setup for diving favors CCV by a little bit, but not much.
It was easy to meet new people at both places.
I posted a review of CCV from a trip I made there a couple of months ago here

I also have a page dedicated to each on the web

CCV - Roatan '10

Underwater! Wow! I can't stop looking over all your photos....they're outstanding. Thanks for sharing.

I'm really interested in your Turks and St Croix pics as we're thinking of heading to one or the other on our next Caribbean trip.
