My wife and I were lucky enough to dive Milford sound a couple of months ago.

Milford sound was beautiful, as the boat left the dock we were surrounded by sheer cliffs and waterfalls. We plunged into freezing cold fresh water, swimming down until we hit a layer of warmer (but still cold) salt water.

Huge trees of rare black coral could be seen at 40ft depth. Invertebrate life was rich, and sea lions swam by. There were nudibranchs and octopus on the walls. All of the sea creatures we saw, were wondering what we were doing there.

It is a fantastic environment isn't it? The highlight for me was being out on the sound in a little boat dwarfed by the sheer cliffs and waterfalls. But there are a couple of interesting dives thrown in! I'm glad you had a good time.

Fantastic photos... I've just started planning a NZ trip for next year and have been looking at Milford. How cold was "cold" water? I'm use to 46-50 degrees in Puget Sound. Are dry suits available?

The operation I dived with, which is the only one doing day trips, only took trips between I think October and April (NZ Spring/Summer), it has however changed hands so check with the operators. It was 14C when I was there in February. I would be surprised if dry suits are available but worth asking.

Probably not locally - but Global Dive in Auckland rent out drysuits, and you could probably arrange something with them; Global Dive - scuba diving training and travel - Auckland, New Zealand.

If you need any advice on planning a trip, let me know as more than happy to help out.

It was about 14 degrees. no dry suits, but perhaps by special arrangement. I was fine in the 2-piece wetsuit though.
