Today at "work" I was working on an old fireboat in Seattle.. We are preparing it for an engineering class tomrow. To get ready we werestarting all the engines( their are 5). These are all old air start 16 cylinder heavy duty engines! When we were strting one of them I tapped the air start for a second to she of it would turn and stuff. It swung the flywheel a little and then it circled back around with the backlash or whatevr and started in reverse! Befor e we knew it black smoke wad pooribg from the turbo charger!!!!!! It filled the engine room in the few seconds it was running. ( room is 80+ feet long 20+ wide and 30 tall). If you put ur hand in front of u u can't see it! It wad freakky'. Their are offices nearby and they came running because of the smoke poori g from the engine room doors(their are 3). And thick smoke was flying out of those doors even after we shut it off after 5 seconds!!!

Sounds like Jimmy's. They do have camshafts and valves though.

nope, not jimmies! jimmies aren t air start. their Cooper Bessermers, 900 hp each. installed 1949, used off a naval ship. it does have jimmies, but their just little 6-71's with 220 hp and an electric start.

all deisles have a cam shaft and valves!.... thats what makes them work! all have air intake and exhaust valves....

Jimmy's only have exhaust valves. The intake is supplied via uniflow scavenging and ports in the block. That's why they all have that blower on the side.

Plenty of Detroit Diesels have air starters. It just depends on how it was ordered. They make that big "WHHOOOPPP" sound, then rattle away.
