Thanks for the info. May now have to switch to Hertz or someone other than AB. Have never had a problem with them but doesn't mean I couldn't in the future and the extra cost is a non starter.

When I looked into it, the cost was $24.95 as stated before. This was Nov '08. This was the 'premium' rider coverage. If you call Amex, they can change your coverage to the 'Normal' coverage (The only one you can get in Cali). The Normal coverage is cheaper- $19.95, but doesn't cover as much. The coverage covers pickup trucks except when rented in Australia, Ireland, Germany, and a few other places. The coverage agreement was available to look over. I either found it online or had them mail me a copy. I brought the copy with me to Bonaire, and read it on the plane. Seems to be pretty good coverage.

The thing that folks need to clarify when getting insurance through AMEX or whomever is not just "what kind of vehicle" is covered (truck vs car) but also WHERE is the vehicle covered. Many/most insurance does NOT cover the vehicle when used off-road...

Remember than on Bonaire, you typically drive the vehicle "off road" the last 100yrds or so for almost every dive site. Also, the entirety of the park is "off road" so your insurance may not cover you there either.

The best thing to do is let your dive buddy rent the truck. If anything bad happens, you can sympathize and say "Awwwww....." and not be out of pocket any cash.

Mine too - and my wife can't drive a manual transmission vehicle (but I have plans to change that our the not-too-distant future). Her job is to be the navigator and photographer. Works out well for us.

How would they even know where an accident happened unless you volunteered the information?

So you're saying "Not a problem, as long as you're willing to lie..."

:eyebrow: or :shakehead:, not sure which...

:D

At a minimum, still worth clarifying the coverage upfront if only so you'll know how honest (or not) you might want to be later...

On the other hand, if you have a disabling accident up in the park it would be hard to push the truck all the way down to Rincon and then say "Gee, I'm not really sure what happened..."

What rental vehicle insurance do you use to cover this RJP?

I'm always interested in new ideas and information.
