I mean "BE GENTLE" !!!

Well, let me exaggerate a little first...

Time to time I am reading a post here at " NEW DIVERS & THOSE CONSIDERING DIVING " forum something like:

" Well, if you want to make it easy on you try to go DIR or 3/4 BTC system but of course ADIC indicates that you must follow a SD or TK rule. In any case did you considered to talk to your DM at your LDS for a MTP or BTD setup? "

Above type of posts could be much better if it was written in Chinese or even in a forgotten Aztec dialect.

It may help me to feel "less" stupid since at least I will have an excuse for not to make sense out of it.

For God sake friends, the key word is " NEW " or even greener than new who are just "CONSIDERING" diving. We're not experts or familiar with the diving jargon 100%.

Trying to decipher some of those posts taking hours at a time.

Try to be more descriptive in your postings please.

Because believe it or not, more of us other than the original owners of those questions are reading those great responses of yours as a learning tool.

I was killing myself to figure it out to find the location of that dive shop called LDS which was referred by many here...First I thought it must be a big chain since everyone was referring as " your local LDS". I thought "damn this LDS must be all over the country but why I can't find one in my neighborhood?"

Imagine how dumb I felt after figuring out what the heck that stands for.:rofl3:

C'mon... be gentle on us newbies !!! ;)

Hey there Jim! I can definitely see what you mean by your post. I as a Scuba newbie have a bit of trouble deciphering the Acronyms used on the board but we can't blame them for doing this because it is second nature to them just as it will be to us one day. But I totally understand your position because I read them all the time in the different threads in this forum. For example, a Scuba Board member had asked about whether to use a longer AAS hose to do diving as opposed to the shorter hoses for the regulator. I have no idea what AAS means lolol But ya thanks for posting this...some of us newbies are more timid about posting these kinds of messages and get some bad responses in return! Happy diving! Later!

AAS=Alternative Air Source :)

I've got to agree with the OP, it took a few months of reading posts before I had a clue what half of the acronyms and colloquialisms meant, once I learned a lot of the posts made much more sense and were way more helpful. The problem is that a lot of posters don't really look what forum they are in and just post their replies. It does seem that a lot of posters will use more complete words and phrases when responding to specific questions from new members though.

Just my .02

Hmm ... I agree ... I have been diving for a while and still get confused with the acronyms..

My suggestion is to just ask, as MOST SB'ers (scubaboarders) are friendly and wont bite ;)

So are you going to tell folks what LDS stands for or not?

:D

Seems to be a bit of that going around, I'm sure I heard someone point that out somewhere.

LDS = Lonely Diver Syndrome ?

LDS= Lost During Shopping ?

LDS= Lame Duck Stories ?

more to come...

Well Capt.Jim, I thing ScubaGirlJg got it in one for you. For many of us, these terms are just second nature. Not knowing the depth of experience or background of those asking the questions, we just respond with the answer to the question, and then elaborate if needed.

How many times do you use the term forecastle, or head when talking to land lubbers? Ever taken the time to explain the differences between a line and a sheet? It's easy (and often considered a sign of respect) to presume others are knowledgeable, intelligent adults who will ask for more information if they don't understand the question. (Boy, not sure that one came out right) I may not be saying this well, but I hope you get my drift.

Have fun diving,
Mike
