I use a small waterproof pouch on a lanyard. Works perfect.

For most locations, I lock my wallet in the car. In some places (like night diving in maui) is is not a good idea. Some locals will wait for you to drop down and then break into your car. When I am in places like this, I strip the car of anything worth stealing and leave it open and unlocked.

FWIW: This chipped keys seem to be water proof. The ones with the remote control are not (found this out the hard way). Also the cost for a chipped key may depend on how many you have (due to programming requirements). If you have 2 already, the 3rd one is a lot less expensive, you only have to buy the key and program it yourself. However, if you are down to 1 key, then you must also pay the dealer to reprogram it, making it even more expensive.

How do you program the key yourself?

Nice shot of you loading your VLP (very low pressure) 40 cylinder into your car.

The money I saved by buying an old car that has a regular key is spent on dive gear and trips. I clip my key to a bolt snap with a split ring, and clip that to a D-ring on my rig. That way I can open my car before I take my gloves off if I have to.

In Bonaire when I am shore diving I leave the truck unlocked with nothing fo value in it. I have an old small dive light that no longer works, but is still water tight. I took the insides out, and it is now a water tight "dive safe". I just clip it off to my d-ring.

Who doesn't have an old unused light laying around?

I used to clip my car key to my BC. (My car is 21 years old so no fancy key)

Recently I've been putting it in the pocket of my undergarment under my drysuit, but, after the last dive, never again !

It just about poked a hole in my stomach. No attempt at re-positioning it helped either, not even inflating the drysuit on the surface and trying to moved stuff around.

Was pretty uncomfortable, and it was only in water 4 metres deep!!

I lock my keys inside my old pickup truck. I leave a wire coat hanger in the truck bed, and just break in after the dive :D

Actually, last week I was so excited to get in the water not only did I forget to lock the truck, I forgot to close the driver's side door... :lotsalove:

Luckily, not many people were at the beach that morning, and those who were there were obviously honest folks.

Best wishes.

Where do you put your _____ while diving? (I thought the previous 47 threads had this resolved)

Why bother anyway ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2-k-7fPfn4

How do you program the key yourself?

For my VW, there's a computer module that controls the electronic keys and remotes. You're actually programming the module to recognize the key, not the key itself. The way you program a new remote is to put an existing working key in the ignition and turn the car on, then use your new remote to lock the car and unlock it. I assume this also works with the chipped keys, you just use the same method except lock and unlock the doors with the key.

Interestingly enough, neither VW nor my usual mechanic knew about this. When I replaced the computer module in my passat (they put it under the mat in the front seat, in cars that are notorious leakers) my mechanic went so far as to send me to VW with a case of beer to bribe his buddy there to re-program my module without the $100+ fee. I did some searching on VW forums and found the answer.

I imagine that other car makes have a similar method for programming additional keys.
