Traveling to Tortola myself in June for a wedding and am staying at LBBR. Just starting to research (just got in from Roatan), is Dive Tortola basically the only op around or just the best? Good luck with your travels, would be interested to hear how everything goes.

Dive Tortola is one of many. I have never dived with them (although I do rent tanks from them occasionally) and they seem pleasant enough.

You can find a list of most of the dive operators in the BVI at: BVISO Home

I seem to recall that there was a small operation working out of Long Bay itself a while back, but they may have folded. If that is right, then the closest operation to Long Bay would be Blue Water Divers in Nanny Cay (nice guys, but very laid back). I tend to dive with Sail Caribbean Divers - very professional outfit, but wrong end of the island for you - it would be about a 40 minute drive.

To help you with your research, here was a thread I posted a while back to assist visitors coming to the BVI:

I have never stayed at Long Bay. However, we have stayed on Tortola twice. The first time we found a villa through areanavillas.com that fit us perfectly. The one we had was just up the hill from Long Bay resort and we could walk there, which worked out well as we rented a car from the car rental office at the resort. The other time we stayed in Cane Garden Bay, which is a great option because it is a nice beach when no cruise ship visitors (so I'm told, I scheduled our days there to avoid cruise ship days) but you may be diving during the cruise ship invasion anyway, but it also has great options in terms of restaurants and night life all within walking distance (you will still need to rent a car for the week). There is a route over the spine of the mountain ridge that runs across Tortola from Cane Garden to Road Town, so the drive can be done in a relatively short amount of time. As people have mentioned, the roads are steep. We stayed at the mongoose apartments and absolutely LOVED it - mongooseapartments.com . I cannot recommend them enough. One really nice thing about the mongoose is it is set back a ways from Cane Garden Bay, so it has the feeling of being secluded but you are actually in walking distance to the beach and all restaurants. We prefer to stay in places with kitchens to have the option of cooking for ourselves or going out to eat. Sorry not to answer the original question (i.e. comments on Long Bay) but figured I would throw out some other options. Either way, enjoy the BVI.... it's pretty hard not to!

mtheiss, you mind if I ask which villa you stayed in at areanavillas.com? Seems like they have quite a few...I'm attending a wedding at LBBR but it seems I can save a few bucks and have accomodations more "my style" if I arrange off site. But I would like to be in the immediate area. And did you learn of any other good diving spots on the island while there, such as on the east end? I plan on going down a few days early to explore / stay / dive another area of the island prior to hitting Long Bay.

Thanks for the info, very helpful!!
