I was doing some pool dives earlier working on my fundamentals trying to exit my BC and put it back on in water. I was having a much harder time getting out of a Hog harness than a back inflate jacket BC. My right shoulder tends to pop out of place easily so I have to be careful. On the jacket I had a quick release buckle that I could pop to get out. On the Hog harness I was swimming and maneuvering around a bit more to get it on. I don't really perceive this being a serious problem and one that wouldn't scare me away from the harness, but getting into a harness easier would be a selling point to me.

Anyone ever install one on their Hog harness or should I just jump past the Hog and go to a more conventional harness with built in buckles?

You might have the harness too tight. Pushing up on the tank with one hand and shrugging the shoulders should do the trick.

DIR-diver.com - Adjust the backplate

Use this guide as a baseline to adjust your harness, after that it is practice. Also, 2 tips to getting out of the harness quickly:
- Pull it over your head. Just grab the tank valve and pull it straight over. Replace it the same way. This is probably the easiest way to do it w/ singles.
- If you have your back-up lights attached to your shoulder d-rings, remove the head of the light from the retaining bands and then pull the light away from your body. This will pull your shoulder strap off and then you can flip the rig around, pivoting on your other shoulder strap.

Don't put quick-release buckles on a hog harness. It's like buying a sports car w/ an automatic. :)

I have installed single quick-releases on a single piece harness (which was no longer single piece after that, of course). For one harness, I took the webbing to a shoe shop and had the buckles sewn in the middle of the left chest strap, for the other I laced the cut webbing ends back through SS slide keepers positioned above and below the buckle. Either approach works, although I prefer the sewn approach. There doesn't seem to be any particular value in paying extra for one of the deluxe harnesses with built-in QRs. The sewing cost $6, the webbing was cheap, and the shoe shop is next to another store I frequent so it wasn't an extra trip. Having said that, I use the QR for getting OUT of my rig, after a dive, when I am diving dry. I have not tried using the QR for getting INTO the rig, in the water or on land, so I can't say if it makes it easier or not.

I can do the sewing/gluing myself as I have done it many times with my backpacking gear for one thing or another. I prefer to sew and use a dab of plastic glue. I just wanted to get some opinions on the subject just in case there was some really good reason to not do it.

and don't get me started on sports cars and automatics... give me a sport shift any day as I think the standard H is one of the dumbest shifting systems to standardize on.

Blasphemer! I'll take a clutch and stick over a slush-box any day of the week. I like the auto-clutch manuals (true dual-clutch, sequential trans) but the man-u-matics are the worst ever :)

This method works extremely well provided you remember to undo the crotch strap and waist belt first.

If you're having trouble getting in and out of it, the shoulder straps are probably too tight or you're doing it wrong.

Someone who is already successfully using a hog harness and makes it look easy should be able to help you with the adjustments.
