We are planning a return trip to Utila this winter. Last year we stayed at Laguna Beach and really enjoyed it. The only complaint we had concerned the 30 minute "jungle stumble" coming back from town at night. We were generally the only people who went into town at night, so it was a lonely walk, although we were not especially concerned about our safety.

Can anyone suggest a good hotel in town with a decent dive operation? If I recall, the Mango Inn looked like an OK spot, although we didn't really check it out too carefully.

Looking at the boats, I don't think anyone other than the Utila Dive Lodge (which is booked the week we are going) had boats that were remotely comparable to Laguna Beach's.

I should mention that we are young at heart 40-50 year olds.... loved hitting Tranguilla most nights!

Thanks for your help!

Mango Inn is a great place!

Thanks PB... Did you dive with UDC? How were they? Was the afternoon dive on the north side, or did they stay close to town? Their boats looked pretty slow compared to Laguna Beach...

Thanks!

wait for Utila lodge to be available or go to Roatan instead, more choices in hotels.

Check out Captain Morgan's, you can stay in one of the hotels out on the Cays for a couple of nights, make sure you do a night dive in channel by their dock and head south, tons of toad fish honking away. Their dive boat comes out from town every morning, drops off some customers then picks up the Cay divers for the day, in the afternoon, they stop off at the Cay, drop people off and head into town for the afternoon.

There is no Tranqs out on Cays, but you may enjoy the sunset and the locals, make sure to stay in the hotel by Mr. Donald's house (Kayla II), the main Captain Morgan's hotel isn't quite as private.

No, but I know them and they run a good operation! It's about a few dive sites all go to and all are close, so speed is not an issue! ;)

Captain Morgan's looks amazing... But as you point out, no Tranguilla, so that won't work.

Mango was booked for our week, so I guess it's back to Laguna Beach... That stumble wasn't that bad I guess... and we've done it enough times now! ;)

Thanks for your help folks....

I would still recommend a couple days diving and staying out on the Cays, if after the first night you don't like it, then ditch it... no sand flies!!!!

That's an interesting thought. Kerry, our captain at Laguna Beach lived there, so maybe we could move out there for a night or two and have them pick us up on the way past in the AM...

That's a great idea... thanks!

If Kerry can't pick you up, stay @ the Lighthouse in town and dive with Water Sports...
