Then I would recommend for you to put your snorkel back on, anytime you are not actually going into a cave or shipwreck.

And get yourself a backup timer-gauge, so that you are not buddy-dependent.

And hold your light in your right hand, to keep it away from your compass on your left wrist, so that the electrical current does not deflect the needle.

And give up deco on the fly, because it simply is not reliable for everyone across the board.

Just suggestions, to get over the intense programming.:)

I have yet to NEED a snorkel in 20 years of diving. I've used them, and enjoyed using them, but do not feel any NEED for one, in the type of open water diving I do.

I have a backup timer/gauge, in the form of my Citizen Aqualand watch. Did I miss something where DIR gear configurations forbid such a thing?

My light does not cause my compass needle to deflect. Perhaps you have a crappy light? Holding it in my left hand is necessary so I can work my camera, use it to shine on my gauge during night dives, etc. It works well for me, and holding it in my right hand does not. Plus, once I get a scooter, I won't have to change anything. So why should I hold it in my right hand again? (except for temporary holds, of course)

I think others have sufficiently covered deco on the fly...

No other system has that...................

I seriously doubt that. Yes I see LOTS of stuff I don't like (like stuffed hoses etc.) when I'm out diving but if I limited myself to the "Regime" I'd never get any dives in. Too many of the "experts" I see spouting off at the mouth are basically DIR quarry divers and really have no serious dive experience. I was talking with a VERY EXPERIENCED Northeast wreck diver the other day and he recommended adding a single release to my harness to make getting out of the rig a bit easier on his boat as the tanks sit pretty low on the gunwale. I can deal with it by dropping to the deck to get out but I must admit I've thought about it. And really now, what are the chances of your rig coming off underwater? Pretty slim. If you bust the clip topside you should pick it up in your buddy checks and you won't dive until it's fixed anyway. I think too many Kool Aide guzzlers just focus on the stupid crap and forget about the big picture. I'd much rather dive with a guy with an extra clip on his chest that hangs with me during the dive, and dives the plan rather than some convert that goes around (yes to this day) calling people strokes on the internet before he goes out to the quarry to hold hands with his buddy while drilling in the quarry. Get some big dives in, do some serious dives and then come back here and MAYBE you'll earn the right to go around calling divers strokes.

Feel Better?

It looks like your experience is not much better. You may not be diving in a quarry, but in reality neither are most of the DIR posters here.

Try not to be so short sighted, it's about more then a light and a reel. I care because there are other people reading this thread and since all of you insist on posting your singular view of things, I think it's reasonable to present more then one side of things.

If you're tired of thinking, then DIR is the right choice for you. :D

We can't possibly win.

Either we're obsessing over the different between stainless steel and brass boltsnaps and missing the big picture and doing too much internet diving -- or else we're being mindless lemmings who never think about anything.

Personally I'm going to go throw a couple of gavins in the back of the car with a 3,000 foot reel and go run some line today...

The fact that "nereas" thanked OneBrightGator's post tells me everything I need to know.

FWIW, they've been using sidemount to explore certain tighter paths in the WKPP project. JJ has essentially developed an official DIR gear configuration for sidemount... they just haven't had the spare time to put it all into writing, since they don't consider it a high priority.

George talked about sidemount years ago. Its safe to say it will remain a fringe equipment config. And there won't be "mixed" teams, etc.

I have no problem letting anyone know how much experience I have, or don't have. I have about 180 or so dives in many environments and I'm just getting into tech diving here in the Northeast. So next to the hardcore wreck diver with 2000 + dives I'm a nobody. But I don't go around knocking everyone that has a different clip than I do and throwing out the stroke word here and there. There seems to be a bit of that going on and I just think it's in poor taste.
