Dear all,

I'm about to change all my UW photo gear for:
Nikon D300 and S&S housing. I owe 2x Inon Z-240 strobes that I always used in manual mode with my previous housing.
Now, would the S&S TTL controller III (or II) work with those 2 strobes to give me TTL control? I don't necessarily need it, but it would be good if I had the choice.
I received an answer to an e-mail to the S&S HK dealer which says that the controller works only for the S&S strobes. I can see it as a way of covering themselves and I saw posted somewhere that people are using it in that configuration.
What is your suggestion: get it or not? if yes controller II or III?

Thanks a lot.
alex

Sorry, while No help here (from me that is), but I have the same rig.
D300, S&S Housing w/2 Z-240s, Nano Focus

My impression is that it will work, but just took the housing for the first swim to check for leaks, so haven't tried anything yet...
Wanted to track this thread... so thanks for asking it....

That is absolutely false! It works fine with zero issues in fuction with the Z240's.

There is one problem that I keep encountering - flood. I am getting my 3rd type II ttl converter NEW from S&S tomorrow as my previous 2 have flooded with in a few dives. I find that they are good if you want to take the quick shot. But if you got time to vary the settings and get the exposure that you are looking for then the ttl converter is not needed. The latter is my opinion and when my new converter arrives tomorrow it is going back on the shelf to be sold.

I found this on the internet iTTL Test We did it at our shop as well but the forum is in Chinese.

Any idea if the S&S controller III works as well as the II? What's the difference?
I'm still very undecided what to do: buy it or not? I've been shooting manual for a while and I enjoy it. Having said that, having TTL available it's another option. I'll see how much money I have left next week after receiving the housing!
Thanks a million for you replies.

Its all cosmetics...the batter cover is of a different material and sockets are located in a different position. Internals from I know is the same.

If your zipping along in current and dont have time to manually adjust then IMO the ttl converter is worth it.

The TTL converter is an indispensable piece of equipment for your DSLR set up. The Inon strobes generally work, however I have seen some instances where they did not. Sea & sea ONLY guarantees proper operation with Sea & Sea strobes, Sea & Sea Housing and of course the Sea & Sea TTL Converter.

That iTTL test linked above was mine :-).

My D200 was housed in a Subal with the original iTTL convertor (not a II or a III) and dual Inon Z240's.

I, too, have moved on to the D300 and hope to house it in an optically fired Seatool housing and eliminate the convertor as well as sync cords (weak link in any system IMHO).

Just an update, I stand corrected, no TTL with the Inon Stobes for the D300 Sea & Sea housing without the Converter noted above..

Backscatter replied back to my question:

No TTL with the Inon strobes. To get TTL you need a TTL converter. Sea & Sea have one, but it only really works with the Sea & Sea strobes. I tested it with the Inons and was not thrilled with the results.

You can use the insulating disc that comes with the Z240 strobe and put that in the bulkhead labeled converter, then you can use the strobe in manual. No need on the other bulkhead as it is wired for manual.

The magnet switch on the right side of the strobe should be in the down position.

Then just shoot the strobe in manual, don’t use the sttl or auto settings.

The shop where I bought all my stuff from, agreed to let me try the converter before I buy it (and even I decide not to!). When they receive it I will try it and tell you how it is.
In the meanwhile I just opened my D300 box... very impressed! It's another shooting planet!
