The people working in the LDS's that I go to are very modest & humble. I do remember 2 local shops that were full of employees like that but neither one of those shops are around today. Sometimes things just have a way of working themselves out .

I think a lot of people are driven to dive by their desire to expand their boundaries. These same people get into certifications and the like and WHAM; their competitive drive/ego takes charge. They are that monster we have all seen on almost every trip. I don't think they are going anywhere, because, unfortunately, they are often the ones that stick around (making them even more prevalent). I just do as posted above: smile, nod, and let them feel better about themselves. No need for me to start a ruckus about it...

You also see a bit of the same attitude here on ScubaBoard. You ask a simple question or make a simple observation and you get bombarded with the cyber-diver experts. There are also a few of the "I knows" here also. You ask a simple question that only needs one simple answer and you get tons of people saying the same thing over and over, to inform everyone that "they know". Some of these people also feel the need to give long winded answers.

I like to hear about others' dives, and I always thought the feeling was reciprocated. Now I wonder.....

Question to those who have been diving for awhile now.
My girlfriend (soon to be wife) and I have been diving for about 2 year. We make it a point to travel somewhere tropical at least once a year and look forward to meeting others who share the same passion as we do.

My question. Why do so many divers who we talk to in our area have what I will call “The one upsmanship?” Meaning no matter what we have done or experienced, the people we talk to have done it better, longer, etc. The local dive store staff seems to be the best at this game. In some instances, it seems they are talking down to us.
Hopefully this is just a geographic oddity and we will not experience this everywhere we travel as we continue our love affair with this sport; meeting other fellow divers who share in our passion is one reason we got started.

I know what you mean, E. I went through the same thing--and still do--with people always trying to one-up me, but in my case it's worse than yours. I try to take TWO trips a year to EVEN MORE exotic locations, with a COUPLE of hot women--twins mostly--and alway run into at least THREE people who constantly try to outdive my stories at every bar out of which I am thrown. So I feel ya' bro, except I feel it deeper, and more acutely.

On an addtional note , I have run into some a-hole dive shops owners on my journeys. Oddly enough, they're some of the most arrogant people in the world. And I'm not sure the basis for their arrogance. Fortunately, I do get to find a few gems and sometiimes mention them on SB.

This thread has turned out to be pretty funny...reading all these replies. I had the pleasure of diving with a fellow the other day that is a paid professional driver and has an unreal history including over 60 dives on the Doria. Lots of his stuff sits in museums. Before I even talked to him I saw that his rig was a simple steel backplate and a very old hog harness made out of some sort of thick cloth material...not the synthetic webbing. The man is one of the nicest, and most easy going divers I've ever met. Spent some time discussing deep water air diving vs. trimix and narcosis. You could tell that he knew more and has done more than just about anyone reading this post...and yet he never let you know it. I asked my friend where he was, turns out he put all his belongings in storage and took a contract job in Turks for 2 years hunting treasure and the owners paid him what he was asking for. Forgive me for digressing but I knew then that experience does not make one arrogant...it is just a personality flaw that some people are born with. I know I'll dive with him again some day, even if I have to hop on a plane. That man literally wrote the book...but you would never know it.
