i have been fascinated by sharks for a long time and have found there to be a lot of shark spotted aound CA i would like to dive with them but i am wondering what safety measures i should take. please help

Safety measures? A CAGE.
Check out Socorro Liveaboard diving aboard Solmar V - Giant Mantas, Sharks and Humpback Whales at the Socorro Islands and Sea of Cortez Its a liveaboard that does great white diving around your area. I know someone who went on it and said it was the best diving he's ever done.

Took the following from Great White Adventures - The Ultimate Shark Diving Experience :
"Although being a certified diver is a plus, it is not required. We conduct cage diving safety courses right on board the vessel prior to commencing diving operations. Whether you have been diving for twenty years or have never been on the ocean before all of our passengers receive the same training."

I just saw the title of the thread and thought of all kinds of ways to go about diving with great whites. Then you just had to go and mention you wanted to be safe. 
I'm not an expert, but isn't it either past, or very close to past, the best time for those shark trips in California?

For the Guadalupe trips out of US/Mexico...I'm pretty sure all of the operators use hookah set-ups. At least the ones I've been with...You don't even need to be certified. The air is supplied by compressor on the boat, you'll be in the cage right off the stern.
The only things you need to know how to do are clear a reg and mask...you will be sitting in a cage. I have been out there with a few people who were not certified.
Go to this website and get yourself a trip booked for 2008, they fill up fast.
It will be one of the coolest things you ever do. I promise

Both these links are the same company. These guys pioneered great white cage diving at Guadalupe and have the most experience with white sharks of all the operators that currently go there.

Get certified and do some dives first. One of the Guadalupe operators - I think it's Great White Adventures - just started putting a cage on the bottom also. But you have to be a certified diver with (obviously) good air management skills to be allowed in it.
I've done GW diving both in a cage and out. Cage is easy. You will be amazed by their size when you see them for the first time underwater. I would stay with a hoookah if you can because your SAC increases quite rapidly. The fun part is seeing them swim through the masses of fish that appear when they chum up. Enjoy!
