Great White shark 16 foot male: Pictures...

My wifes family came in for the weekend and I had to host so off to San Francisco we went. So, since that meant no Monterey diving for me, what's the next best thing? Convincing my wife a trip to the Aquarium Bay is needed.

As we exited the really nice exhibit, they had another small exhibition on the white shark.

I took a couple of pictures so you can get a perspective on the size of these magnificant predators of the California coast.

This a picture of a 16 foot male with females reaching around 18 feet. I used my wife and I and her nephew for accurate scale.

Makes you think twice on how powerful these animals are as they breach the surface on a full grown seal attack.

its good to see on the plaque that the shark is protected by thes state of CA. I whish more countries would look to protect all sharks as we are just starting to find out how important tey are.

I thought that sharks were a game fish. Are they illegal to fish for now or just in some areas? I saw on the news that someone had just caught an 855 pound shark somewhere down in Florida (Destin, FLorida).

I believe that there may possibly be different species of sharks.And that some may be more protected than others.

yea, i should have been more clear. different species are protected differently. in Texas for instance, you are allowed to take one shark a day (non-protected species). 24 inch minimum no maximum. no yearly limit.

anybody know the guidelines for sharks in federal waters?

after reading the tpwd guidelines, i realize sharks are a game fish. i have fished all my life, but never for sharks. we considered them a nuisance. so, i never thought of it as a game fish.

Since sharks are game fish I guess you take them home and cook them. I guess that otherwise you might sell them to someone who would be interested in eating them or using them for fertilzer or cat food since they are usually too lage to mount on a board. Wonder what part of the shark is good eating except for the venerable fin which many in the Orient prize as the major component of a very expensive soup. When I see a lorge fish or land animal like a steer or hog all I can think of is a barbeque.-----------I hope that this post doesn't hurt the sensibilties of anyone on the board including the moderator. Feel free to comment or delete my post if it does. I am only asking a question. I have no agenda, pro or con shark.

You bring up an excellent question Garrobo. Who eats shark and what parts are eaten. Im sure people don't just kill them for the fun of it do they. There has to be a reason for them being fished besides finning them as finning is illegal in the USA isnt it?
