Not a ton of shore diving but my vote would be the Straits of Mackinaw in Michigan. Not to mention then you have five months to travel the south during the winter.

I'll second that!! Many diving snow birds call Rockport, Gloucester and Cape Cod home. Awesome shore diving throughout Cape Ann, fantastic wrecks, great marine life and 3 airports within 45 minutes of Boston when you you can't handle the weather!!

Joe Diver: Yeah, if you are a millionaire. The cheapest place I found in Key Largo was an old, rundown 50x10 foot trailer on a 20X60 lot in a trashy neighborhood for $189,000.00. The cheapest actual house was a little cement block affair that needed torn down for $478,000.00. Good luck.

I know....I know....I keep checking hoping that prices will come down but figure the odds huh? Well, the OP didn't put in a price limit so......

If you can go $750k, you can get a nice vacation/retirement home on one of the canals with a dock.

Or, if you can go 7mil....there's a private island for sale.....I think it's called "Money Key"....seriously.....

I plan to retire soon and relocate to a place with awesome local diving. I want to stay in North America and travel a bit in addition to local diving. Ideally, the location will have good shore diving and numerous offshore dives a short boat ride away.

Tell me about your experiences, either where you have lived, traveled to, or just heard about. Where is the Best Place to Live for local diving?

Take a trip to the Philippines. You may not want to come back; cheap diving, low cost of living, warm whether, friendly people most of who speak English,... Thailand would be another wonderful option.

I know you said North America, but just keep those options open...

I'd say south florida fits your criteria pretty well. The Keys are nice, but real estate is ridiculous, traffic and tourists on one road get annoying after a little while.

You really can't beat the Puget Sound area. I'm a San Diego transplant and I still love to VISIT SOCAl, but Seattle and the surrounding area is amazing! Incredible diving less than an hour in any direction. A few hours drive up to BC for some incredible dives and less than an hour to the Cascade range for great skiing and snowboarding.
Heres a link to some pics of dives that are all within 45 minutes of dt Seattle.
