Hi Leny,

I think your posting for this job opportunity on Scubaboard has caused you more hassle that you expected. I would suggest that you post it or advertise the positions at specific forums that are geared towards Filipino or Thai nationals.

The reality of the Third World is something to experience first hand. The impression that a passing diving tourist gets is not enough to understand that Reality. It is easy to mock the opportunities that Filipinos and Thais would give their left arm and leg for when your minumum wage is $7 US.

Good luck and I hope you find the right people for the the job.

Jim

Wow I was visitor number 35 to the above website. It must be a great reputable company!

I was thinking that at $15000 Salary a instructor would come over for say a month contract.....and train say 10 people to OW certification. this will save you about 12k. and you get more people trained...pay them what you will.
Who needs a c-card. Heck, it is just an aquarium. I dove for 18 years before I traded a pony bottle to a scuba instructor for my first c-card and did just fine. Just tell them not to hold their breath and ascend slowly.
I lived and dived in the Philippines for a few years and was very impressed by the local divers who could outdive me wearing goggles and no fins. It was common to pass a freediver at 60 feet or more while I was wearing a tank. Just go down to the waterfront along Cavite and grab the first 8 guys you see with a speargun and you will be set. You will do fine with those guys in an aquarium but only if you make them leave their guns at home.

Having worked with lots of Filipinos on a cruise ship, I can say this is absolutely true. The Filipinos worked as maid staff and deck staff and were truly wonderful people who sent every dime home to their kids and worked harder than pretty much everyone else on the boat. Some of my friends on the ship were moms who had to be away from her children for 9 - 12 months at a stretch.

But that this is the condition does not make it right to exploit them. (Which, I can't say for sure if this company will or will not be doing so - I don't have enough info.) Many of these overseas positions keep your passport, which essentially means you are at their mercy and even if you want to go home because, say your father died, you can't. Many women from the US have been trapped in Japan in the past even long after they fulfilled their contract obligations. There are numerous positions for the leisure industry in the Middle East, especially for American women and some actually pay very well, but they all make you surrender your passport which to me is dangerous.

So, I'm not mocking the people who take these jobs but am disgusted with the way some (not necessarily this employer in question) takes advantage of these people and essentially enslaves them.

By the way, many leisure job placement companies prefer Brits to Americans because Americans demand too high salaries (I blame that on the cost of paying for your own health insurance when working these jobs.).

Jesus poeple if you arn't interested in the job click the back button and move onto another thread. There is no need to bash this guy's skull in.

Leny Day, Ever read a book call Tom Sawyer? Tom got people to paint a fence by getting them to think it was fun. You just need to make Aquarium cleaning exclusive like don't call it cleaning call it Extreme Aquarium Dive experience. Then charge people to dive with two well paid dive masters/instructors and let them clean while they do it.

Probably don't want to do that, even with experienced people supervising you don't know what these customers would do. Even if they are experienced divers, not many people are going to have dove in an actual aquarium before. Buoyancy control needs to be perfect and also, if you scratch that acryllic glass on the inside (where the water is) it costs ***** loads of money to fix. Even if you charge people for the experience I don't think you would be able to recover the cost of that. Scratching acryllic glass is pretty easy thing to do as well. This could be anything, the metal D ring on your BCD, the metal on your tank strap, your tank and even sand and grit trapped on your suit or glove.
