Pronounced smile lines are tough. I live with a little leak from time to time. Hard not smile underwater.

Mate there are some things we don't need to know so just call them smile lines like everyone else

Learn to keep your face expressionless and smile with your eyes, petroleum jelly works
EVERY time I smile big I get a mask leak. I hate to be expressionless when someone shows me something really cool, but I also hate the mask leak. :)

Ha yeah me too, I love it when we do stuff and I'm laughing, until the mask is full and I'm snorting water

I have listened to these myths, for decades dude, originally it applied to rubber masks made from oil
So I made many tests and began rejuvinating and remoisturising with petroleum jelly many different
types of rubber around the home and shmeared quite a bit on cars and around scuba gear primarily

If the rubber is on the way out due to formula problems no good if it can be saved vaseline will do it

Do not use Petroleum jelly with your mask, it is petroleum based and will disintegrate the silicone skirt on your mask. Use silicone grease.

Now to today, or maybe we can start 40 years ago, silicone masks were firmer, not as subtle as today
again formula issues, some lasted some didn't the clear discoloured, also when stored next to rubber

Now to today or the past 30yrs silicone formula is stable, with magnificent results in stability and flex

My experiments continue, I have been soaking silicone half in oil and air, half in vas and air, for years

For 100% unaffected the same stuff I pull out as I put in totally unaffected the same as when I put it in

Now these shots were taken about a year ago, so I'll see if I can find and crack them open again yeah

for years and years

It is most important to keep the mask seal I use some vaseline diving rebreathers or plenty sunscreen

So have a read and have a think purveyors of the myths having zero facts

I must say though, for many many reasons never ever use silicone on your masks, or on anything else
as it gets everywhere and really affects future gluing

If you’re smiling a lot while diving look into GUE or DIR that should take care of it ;)

Also try not only strap positioning but different tightness etc as previously suggested. I haven’t tried them but MAKO offers exchanges if the fit doesn’t work for you if you don’t want to deal with in in your face sales person trying to convince you that something fits based on $.

What is GUE and DIR?

Thank you for mentioning the positioning of the strap AND different degrees of tightness.

I will repeat what the Chairman said, positive pressure in the mask at depth will reduce or remove most leaks caused by smiling.
