I stayed here from April 14-21, and my only regret is that I didn’t stay longer. I had a 2 day stopover in Bali where I did nothing but sleep and relax by a pool in order to get rid of jet lag from April 12-14 first.

This was one of the best trips I’ve ever had. I’ve been to places like the Maldives, Bora Bora, and Hawaii, staying at top resorts like the Four Seasons, Waldorf Astoria, St. Regis, and Conrad. But this trip was truly special, and I definitely plan to come back.

The service at Komodo Resort was excellent. Every staff member was super friendly and really cared about making sure we had a great time. The service felt authentic not fake/forced. The dive guides were awesome, the restaurant staff (especially Offar and Ellen!) were great, the reception team was very helpful, and the guy who took us out to snorkel from the pier was also fantastic. Even the owner, Julian, came by during dinner to check in and chat with us, which was a nice touch. This is very much a boutique resort experience instead of the resorts with hundreds of rooms.

The location is amazing – you don’t really get how special it is until you’re there. I don't care if there are newer resorts in Labuan Bajo, they can't compete with the location no matter what. Other people have to take long, bumpy speedboat rides every day from Labuan Bajo, but here, you’re already in the perfect spot on a peaceful private island with only about 25 rooms. It’s quiet and calm. Getting to the resort was a breeze as I sent the resort my flight arrival/deperature times and they organized someone to meet me at the airport and transport me as I had an arrival/deperature out of their compliemtnary hours.

Also, there is a beautiful view you can also walk up the hill behind villa 4/5 for a beautiful panoramic view – it’s only a 10-15 minute walk. Highly recommend this!

The house reef is just stunning. It’s super close to the beach, and most of it is only 2-5 meters deep, so you can see a lot just by snorkeling. The coral and marine life here are better than any house reef I’ve seen and even better than most dive sites I’ve visited outside Indonesia. The resort offers on demand complimentary boat rides to the edge of the reef, and then you can drift snorkel back – it takes about 20-35 minutes.

The beach is lovely with clear blue water. You can only go in chest-deep, though, because they want to protect the reef. You have to enter the reef from the pier. Still, it’s perfect for cooling off after sunbathing. It was the end of the 'rainy season' while we were here but there was only one slightly cloudy day with slight rain in the morning. The sun was out in full force no matter what. The benefits of this time is much less crowds in the park itself.

The rooms are super comfy with strong A/C, great beds, and pillows. The design mixes traditional Indonesian style with modern touches. The bathroom is big, with a separate shower area so things don’t get wet. Housekeeping kept everything clean and restocked water daily. Wi-Fi was very fast and seemed to cover the entire island. We stayed in villa 17, and the porch had a great view of the beach – perfect for watching the sunset and sunrise.

The food was tasty and felt like home-cooked meals. There’s a good variety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they’re open to making custom dishes if you ask (just note that language can be a bit of a barrier for very specific requests). I had the all-inclusive package, but the menu prices were very fair, as were the drinks. I am a very picky eater and had zero issues.

We did one excursion outside of diving – the full-day Komodo tour – and it was awesome. If you come all the way here, you have to do it. The views from Padar are crowded but totally worth it, and Pink Beach and seeing the Komodo dragons was also a very neat experience.

The diving was incredible. It was my first time diving in Indonesia, and it was better than anywhere else I’ve been. The coral, sea life, and everything underwater were just amazing. The dive guides and boat crew were great – especially Nando, who guided most of our dives. They are all very safety conscious and it's a valet style diving operation, which my girlfriend appreciated but I have a hogarthian BP/W & long hose tech configuration which most of the staff did not really know how to set up, so I ended up setting up my gear every dive which I prefer anyways. The staff hangs, cleans and stores your dive gear which is very nice.

I did 11 dives, all in central Komodo. We skipped the north because of the strong currents and focused on wide-angle and macro photography sites in the central region. The dive shop is open to dive site requests too in order to avoid repeptive dive sites and I believe they organize groups by experience. The resort doesn’t go to the south yet, but they’re working on a boat that will. The dive prices were very reasonable too.

Overall, I can’t wait to come back. They’re building 3 new villas on the hill with amazing views, and I hope to stay in one of them next time!

Nice report! We are headed We are headed to Komodo Resort & Diving Club on Sebayur next month and are looking forward to both the diving and the stay. The "snorkeling shuttle" is something we were not aware of, but will definitely take advantage of while there!

We are also into macrophotography, so it's encouraging that you did some macro dives. We would also certainly like to see some mantas while there if possible, of course. Sounds like you avoided some of the strong current dives, but did you still get some manta glimpses?

Thanks again for the report, as there have been very few on this forum of others that speak to the diving aspects at this particular resort.

You're going to love it. Getting there from FL is an endeavor on it's own but worth it!

The snorkeling shuttle is basically a little dinghy with a small outboard that is always at the pier. Whenever you want to snorkel, the man at the pier simply takes you a little bit past the southernmost part of the island (beginning of house reef) and you just drift snorkel back to the pier. Takes about 15-25min depending on the current. We never had to wait to use it, as the resort isn't crowded with guests.

I think I saw maybe 50-60 mantas in those 11 dives. We did one dive on manta point, which was breathtaking having so many mantas (dozens) flying all around you. However, I've seen mantas a lot throughout my diving career and my main focus was macro and wide angle of reef so I requested to only do manta point once, which is what the dive shop honored. During dinner, the dive guides would sometimes come up to my table and brief me on tomorrows dive which was nice.

The manta point site is unfortunately a dynamited reef so it's mainly rubble, but I still found a couple nudibranch in the rubble. Even outside of manta point, I still saw several mantas on other dives but I think right about this month or next is the tail end of manta season.

Make sure you communicate what you want to see and do with the dive shop so they can tailor dives to your liking. They have 2-3 dive boats going per day to different sites. You'll be back from the morning 2 dive trip by about 11:30am - 12:30pm depending if you take the speedboat or slow boat. Slow boat is mega comfy with bean bags up top to relax and enjoy the awesome view of all the little islands, while speedboat will get you there and back a little faster. Afternoon dive site is to a local site that is 5 minutes away, which either has a sloping reef or mini wall depending which direction you go.

There were some dive sites that had raging currents where you just superman fly across it with areas where the current stops, but it's not too bad. Maybe I just got lucky? Most dives I did, even batu balong, the current wasn't too bad. I also opted not to go to the north site trips because I didn't want to risk dealing with currents and losing macro opportunities. I'm currently editing a compilation footage of my dives and will post it here when I'm done tomorrow or the day after.

Even if this is a dive trip I highly recommend you don't skip out on the full day Komodo trip!! I had those thoughts but I'm glad I did it. Ideally try and do this excursion in the middle of the week as that is when there will probably be the least amount of crowds I figure. Just be aware the resort needs 6-8 people to do it so you kind of need to be flexible. Communicate this to the resort when you arrive that you want to do this trip, along with your other intentions.

Headed to Komodo Resort last week of May after a week diving Bali!

Thanks for the report!

I was there on a snorkeling tour in October of last year. It was good, but I wouldn't give it the rave reviews you (OP) have. I think you may just have discovered that you really like small, intimate nature-focused resorts rather than big luxury resorts, and it was the contrast with the places you had visited before that impressed you. (I have been previously to Papua Explorers in Indonesian New Guinea, as well as Alami Alor in Alor, Indonesia – I liked both better, though those are special places so maybe not a completely fair comparison.)

A few things I didn't like at Komodo Resort, at least when I was there in October: Lots of essentially invisible sand flies – I got so many bites on my ankles that I got an infection after I returned and had to go to the hospital; very hot during the day which was a big deterrent to exploring the island on foot; frequent brief power outages; food was good but there wasn't a ton of choice, so could get a bit monotonous.

I did get bit a little bit by sand flies and mosquitos but this has happened to me even at a Four Seasons and Waldorfs. It's just the nature of natural islands I think. The only place it hasn't happened to me was man made islands in the Maldives. Nothing crazy though, just a couple bites. Did you scratch your bites open and that caused an infection? I did see staff spray stuff multiple times a day around the resort to control bugs. The new owner seems to really be proactive and on top of things.

And yes, it is very hot especially I would imagine in October. Even the small walk up the hill was hot but I didn't mind. I've done Arizona afternoon summer hiking so it's not really a big deal to me, my girlfriend did not like walking up the hill in the afternoon heat though lol. Worth it for the view. It made for some really refreshing swims in the ocean though!

I did notice the power outages, though they only lasted 30-60 seconds and would only happen a few times a day. The hotel briefed us on these planned outages when we got there and said they would be brief as they run on generators.
