Diver in travel group kept running out of air and sharing on every dive?

Sharing gas with a designated buddy is fine in a true OOA situation or if agreed upon beforehand so that the heavy breather can match the dive time of the lighter breather. But I'd be pissed if I saw a diver hop from person to person and then come to me expecting me to share air in a non-emergency situation. Screw that. Get a bigger tank or cut your dive short.

This is the problem. I'm hard-wired that if someone comes to me needing air, I'm giving them air, bc it may be an emergency.

But someone just floating around asking everyone for air?? I honestly dont know how I would react underwater - I'd probably share my air - but it would lead to a uncomfortable conversation at the surface.

My .02 cents.... Anyone who dove this way, I would not want to dive with. Anyone who thinks its ok to do this, I would not want to dive with. And any operator who allowed this, I would lose me as a customer.

A dive accident will ruin that divers day or worse, and will definitely ruin everyone elses day.

I know operators who very specifically state that an OOA scenario means you are done for the day, and if I was an operator, I'd definitely follow that practice.

You realize that we are not talking about an OOA situation? What is dangerous about sharing gas when you are not OOA? A friend we dive with used to use a lot of air. Really lots. My wife uses almost none. They would often share air and I also would share air with him on occasion. My guess is that in an OOA situation we would not be stressed at all by air sharing after doing it for hours over the years.

But I think the key difference is that it is "Communicated on the boat/land BEFORE" the dive starts.
When on travel vacation dives our group of 5 on the last dive of the trip will all pull our pony regs at the safety stop to breathe them down before disassembly/packing. We always communicate it to the DM, the captain and others diving with us BEFORE we splash. People get really freaked out when they see 5 people in their group all get off their main tank and switch to backup tanks underwater.

If someone says before the dive " I plan to run low on air ",, The DM might want to have a conversation with that diver so the problem can be fixed. We now have the deeper Jupiter Divers reporting their ending pressure after climbing the boat ladder.

Another diver comes to me wanting to share my air, of course I share. But I also shoot my DSMB and end the dive.

When we did it on the trip I led, we amended the policy. the first diver to 1,000 would go on the guide's long hose, the second would go on my long hose, and the third would be when we would begin the ascent.

What kind of depths and how many in the group are we talking about here?

As to the OP's original post, that person/diver and her buddy will be a statistic one day if they continue that behavior.

Once again, why would sharing air when the receiving party is not out of air cause a problem?
