Been reading SB posts for quite sometime.
Decided to finally register an account to ask and answer questions.

I have been diving locally in Hong Kong, as well as abroad in Thailand and Japan.
Will go my on first liveaboard trip in Maldives at the end of year - Tips and advice are welcome!
Please feel free to drop me any message!

Welcome! I have been to Hongkong about 8 years ago. I did not know that there is diving, well tbh I have not looked for it especially. But while I have been there I also did not notice any diving advertisment. So what kind of dive sites do you have?

Indeed there isn't much advertisement! Hong Kong definitely isn't famous for its diving.
Most of us dive in Hong Kong for training/ certification and conservation purposes.

The visibility usually ranges from <1m to 5m, 70% murky 30% clear water in most sites.
As for aquatic life, most commonly encountered are moray eels, Clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii) with anemone shrimp, puffers, stingray, stonefish and occasionally nudibranches.

Most dives are boat dives leaving from Sai Kung Pier/ Hebe Haven's Pak Sha Wan Pier. There are a few operators departing from Yau Tong and Hong Kong Island south side too.
Also a few operators doing shore dives from Clear Water Bay, whereby the waters are shallow with sand base. Hence visibility is usually much better with less current, making it a great place for newbies divers.

There's annual reef check too. Most corals in Hong Kong are stony ones.

Greetings from Hong Kong as well!
I have only dove from the islands in Maldives, but the water was so blue and full of lives. I am sure you will have an amazing time on the liveaboard.

Just in case you plan to use rental gear - it seems a lot of the rental shops there just gives you shorties, but the thermocline can quite cold sometimes. Would recommend bringing your own. (My luggage got delayed for 2 days and I was stuck on rental....)

Thank you so much for your advice, Sel!
I intend to bring my own gear to the liveaboard trip... But if my luggage get delayed or lost somewhere in transit, then I will have no choice but to use as well.
Maybe I should pack my wetsuit into my carry-on in that case.

How did you find the Maldivian current?

It gets quite strong at places, but nothing a few harder kick and getting lower/closer to the walls didn't fix. The guides recommended bringing reef hook, but I haven't felt the need to use it during my trip back in October.

Sounds like partially my local conditions, but warmer. Like that!
But you see quiet other things and creatures under water.

I should consider come back and try.

Enjoy Maledives! Never been there as well ... are you sure your suit fits into carry-on luggage? Well ok if its like 3mm its light and thin. But on the way back it still might be a bit wet, so maybe then its better to put that into checked luggage. So remember thst for the weight check of your luggage.
