This thread's a good idea. I've started threads similar to this one on our local dive forum, Scuba Toys, and a group of diving friends on FaceBook.

To satisfy the increasing demand for shark fin soup, fins are cut off of millions of living sharks and the mutilated animals are then thrown back into the ocean to die—a practice known as "finning." Though the U.S. outlawed this practice in 2000, the current law is difficult to enforce.

Fortunately, federal legislation to address this issue is advancing. Congress is currently considering the Shark Conservation Act (H.R. 81/S. 850) that would protect sharks from this gruesome practice. This legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate Commerce Committee. As the year draws to a close, the U.S. Senate – the final legislative hurdle on the path to ending finning in the U.S. – is planning to create a package of related bills which may include this critical legislation.

Please complete and submit the form below to add your name to the petition to the bill's sponsor, Senator John Kerry. He has the power to move the bill forward by pushing for its inclusion in the package of bills for Senate consideration. We must encourage him to do everything he can to make sure it is included. Sign today, we'll deliver your signatures on December 10.

Remember to personalize the email message below by expressing your opinion in your own words; it's much more effective.
