I have a zeagle 50 D that when you turn the air on it puts to much pressure to to the 2nd stage and makes it blow off. I put the second stage on my back up dacor and it works fine and the dacor second stage on the zeagle and the same problem. Is this a normal problem with them. On our last dive trip my buddy had the whole top blow off his zeagle 50 D. I was told zeagle was one of the best but they are not proving it by us. My 40 year old dacor stuff seems to be doing better. Any help thanks Danny

Sounds like your IP is to high, or it is creeping.
When was it last serviced?
If you do not have the skills to repair it, then take it to a service center.
Even new sometimes the IP creeps.

Definitely IP creep. A servicing should solve that. If you've just purchased it, I would suspect it would be covered under warranty. One thing about Zeagle, is that they will do whatever it takes to keep a customer happy, so hang in there, and get it sorted out. There are a lot of us who are very happy Zeagle reg owners, infact for my cold, deep dives in the Great Lakes, they are the brand I trust the most.

How can a second stage "blow off" ?!

IP creep is definitely what you have here. It's happened with my 50D and it's happened with many other brands of regulators I've seen at my dive shop. It's not unusual and it's an easy fix. Take it back to the dealer and get it rebuilt. Problem will be solved.

How can a second "blow off"?

A Zeagle second stage is a "downstream" valve which is kept from free-flowing solely by spring pressure holding the poppet shut against the orifice. If too much pressure is on the poppet, it opens. This is "blowing off" and it's a safety feature for when IP gets too high.

An "upstream" valve such as a Poseidon won't blow off like a downstream valve will. That's why Poseidon has propietary hoses on their second stages (well, one reason, anyway...). Their hoses have relief valves built into them and they will releive excess pressure by the hose opening.

Now you know.

Could also be the high pressure seat on the first stage right?

If too much pressure is on the poppet, it opens. This is "blowing off"

I thought he meant it literally. I've never heard "freeflow" refered to as "blowing off."

Freeflow is when it flows and dont stop blowing off is when it "freeflows" for just a few seconds and stops

Thanks for all your help reg is in the shop now

Dano,
That is usually called "burping" and is a sign that the intermediate pressure from the first stage is either set too high for the adjustment of the second stage, or, (more likely, since it appears to have worked well before) that the high pressure seat in the first stage is defective, allowing the intermediate pressure to gradually increase. Pressure to the second stage increases until it causes the second stage seat to open. When the second stage burps, the excess pressure is temporarily relieved and the second stage seat closes until the pressure again builds up causing another burp.

That is a reason everyone should own an IP gauge and use it routinely to check their reg. It clips into the LP inflator hose and takes less than a minute to check.

Over the weekend I found one of my first stages higher than normal. Good thing I caught it before it free flowed.
