OK, I don't know how this is going to turn out at all... but it's worth a shot. What are your favourite songs? If you had to put them all onto one CD, what songs would they be and why? Take some thought... Anything goes!
Mine? Here it goes:

Harvey Nillson- Lime in the Coconut. It's a playful song, and I like playful songs.
Get Low- Lil Jon and the East Side Boys. GREAT beat and it makes you get pumped.
Murder She Wrote- Chaka Demus & Pliers. ibid... that and the lyrics are soo smooth.
Simon and Garfunkel- Cecilia. Great song to seranade people to.
Simon and Garfunkel- America. I dunno, I just like it...
Simon and Garfunkel- Only Living Boy in New York. Not well known... but thought provoking.
Darude- Sandstorm. BEST techno song... no lyrics, just beat.
Wheatus- Truffles. A short song... about a minute, but its a great song about the underdog.
Dispatch- The General. It is the summation of all I stand for.
The Jackal- Ronny Jordan. A GREAT story.... Jazzy too.
Somewhere Only we Know- Keane. Great Piano.
A Little Respect- Wheatus- one of the greatest under-radar ballads
Here Comes the Hotstepper- Ini Kamoze. 90's Smoooth... need I say more?
One Day More- Les Misérables. Great Musical
At the End of the Day- ibid.. Ibid.
Masquerade- The Phantom of the Opera. Only good song in that musical. Sorry.
007 (Shanty Town)- 50's Ska... Just sounds good.
Goodies- Ciara. Just makes you want to dance.
The Blower's Daughter- Damien Rice. Beautiful Indie song
Bullet and a Target- Citizen Cope. another Indie song
Pablo Picasso- Citizen Cope. an Intriguing song about obsession

hmm... that's all I can think of now. I really hope this catches on... One can realyl find out a lot about people by looking at their music library. You don't have to make a big list, you can just add on...

Really think!

I'm all over the map musically. I'll just name a few of favorite bands right now. This list changes all the time.

Marilyn Manson
Rage Against the Machine & Audio Slave (same band, different singer)
Miles Davis (trumpet)
Keith Jarret (piano)
Pat Matheny (guitar) ... (as an aside: in terms of jazz players there are three categories.....those who play their instruments (90%), those who are played by their instruments (9%) and those who make an instrument come to life and sing (1%) these three guys are the 1% in my book..... )

....carrying on....
Bjork
Fat Boy Slim
The Chemical Brothers
St. Germain (and look alike bands)
Evenescence
Counting Crows (and similar)

....and from the older bands....
Spin Doctors
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Yes
Rush

... And from the classical corner I'm fond of.....
Anything Baroque
Dvorak's (sp?) grandiose symphonies (and look alikes)
small brass formations
anything with wicked piano

.
.
.

And a million others.

The only broad categories I don't think I'd put on a CD for diving would be Opera and that cheap sounding new age elevator music mixed with whale song, lousy synth and electric drums that sound like they came out of a child's toy.

R..

WOW...this is always the TOUGHEST thing for me to lock into!
CURRENTLY... I have Frank Zappa playing in the car, and a progressive rock band called Spock's Beard playing in my walkman at the gym!

Normally, you can find me listening to the following :

Rush
Pink Floyd
Genesis
Yes
Gov't Mule
Dave Matthews
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Led Zeppelin
Dream Theater
Allman Bros
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Sting/Police
Steely Dan
Chicago

Styles:

Progressive Rock
Classic Rock
Jazz
Classical
you name it except hard core Country, rap, and easy listening

In my other life.. I collect recordings of indeterminate origin (bootleg concerts)

^^
hmm... I think I have an idea of what kind of music you like. Out of your list, Rush is a little too wierd for me, same with Pink Floyd, but I do like Steely Dan and Dave Matthews. My favourite song by DMB is surely "Two Step". Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain. Who can't love lyrics like that?! If you haven't already listen to these, I'd reccomend "The General" by Dispatch, and anything by OAR or Phish.

I don't know... for some reason I can't get into Phish... I have a few discs I picked up at the used disc store and a ew bootlegs, but for some resaon.. same with the Grateful Dead... I like some of their tunes, but just can't latch on to them

Don't know Oar though.

I agree Two Step is a great tune!

Im a little weird for my age as i prefer alot of 80's style stuff, but mainly its a wide range as long as its not rap i will be fine.
