Hi,
I am hoping that somebody here can give me some insite on visiting Yap. I will be staying at the Hilltop Motel and we have a kitchenette. We are looking to do our own cooking for some of our dinners and going out for some of our dinners. Can anybody give me some information regarding purchasing foods in that area? How much does food cost? Are there any local restaurants near the motel ? More importantly, how much does beer cost :D ? I appreciate any information anybody can give me regarding the above.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
Not sure where your hotel is but we stayed in the Manta Ray just on the edge of Colonia. There were a couple of supermarkets in the town and we certainly bought beer and snacks there and I dont remember being surprised by the prices. As for restaurants we ate at the Manta Ray and it was good food and not hideously expensive. I understand they have just got a new chef who is meant to be even better. More importantly they have their own micro brewery and a quiet beer on the deck of the Mnuw et the end of the day brought it to a good close. Almost opposite there was another restaurant that was pretty good. Again reasonably priced rather than cheap.
Hope this helps albeit a bit vague.
Dave

I'm not sure exactly where Hilltop is located other than it's in Colonia. We stayed at Manta Ray which is also in the town. I think there were 3 or 4 places to eat within walking distance. We ate lunch at a little place across the road from Manta Ray because the cost was significantly less. We did local lunches for about $6. There was a small bakery/restaurant about a block away where we purchased donuts/rolls for breakfast saving many dollars. There was a small store about a block away in the other direction that had some basic supplies including some frozen meats but we didn't really purchase anything there. This is a very remote island so prices are fairly high. We drank draft beer brewed on site at Manta Ray that I think was $4 a glass. There is an adult beverage store next to the grocery but I don't remember the prices. I don't think they were outrageous however. The store hours are very limited.
We had a few dinners at Manta Ray that ran from $20 for a pizza and beer to $40 or so for other things. I suspect the range is from $20 to $80 for two with maybe one beer.
We splurged and ate on the top of the hill at Trader's Ridge. That dinner and wine was about $100 and it was excellent.
You can find several restaurants listed by searching Colonia, Yap.
The diving was pretty good. We went in early November and didn't see as many Mantas as we had hoped but did see 6 at once on one dive. The current was wicked. Actually the reef diving there is fun but they don't do it often.

Well, I just got back from Yap and the Hilltop was perfect and so was diving with Beyond the Reef. If you want a cheaper alternative to Manta Bay, email me and I will give you the dirt on the above :D
