As im about to purchase a wrist computer and have narrowed the search down to three options based on the price and the functions.

Suunto "Vyper" Air/Nitrox
Suunto Mosquito
Oceanic Versa Pro Air/Nitrox

Please let me know about the three, be it individually / or as a whole. On the same note if you think there is a better dive computer around for roughly the same price, let me know what it is so i can have good look

I know im probably going to start a war by leaving the question so open, but here goes

Cheers

They are all good. Suunto's have some nice features including dive playback and average depth computation, but are more conservative than the Oceanic. If you like the Mosquito, make sure you can read it underwater. The numbers are too small for some people.

Does anyone know how much more the suunto computers are conservative than the oceanic?

What are the differences between the two suunto computers? Do they use the same algorithms? Are their features different?

And finally are there any computers that compete with these computers listed above?

Cheers

You might want to take a look at what Genesis offers. I have the Resource and there is an air/nitrox version of the same model. Easy to read and understand...biggest weakness in my book is the dim light....other than that....no complaints...and i think it is a lot cheaper.

Suunto has always been reguarded as the best from all the people I have talked with. Just make sure it is user programable without a pc. Oceanics have been dubbed bendomatics because they are very liberal. I currently own the mares m1 wrist mount. For the price it cant be beat. I paid $235 at leisurepro. It is user programmable, nitrox ready, calculates deco stops if you bust ndl's, has a good backlight, easy to read, only displays vital info: dive time, ndl's(or deco stop if violated) and current depth. You can access temp on screen 2. It has user replacable (aa) batteries. You can by a dowload kit that tracks your dive in 20 second intervals.it store somewhere around 40 hours of logged profiles. It has a planning mode and a simulater mode to help with planning your next dive. It also keeps record of your total dives logged on it and the number of hours. Only weakness of the m1 is the buttons can be difficult to push, but they do get better with time.

With regard to conservatism, go over to www.scubadiving.com and look in their gear review section for some recent writeups. One has some graphs. Also, read the reviews over at www.divernet.com . Someone also posted some data in this forum that came from a German magazine.

What computers compete with these, well just about all of them. At that price point look at the Aladin Pro Ultra, Aeris Atmos II, Mares M1, Dacor Darwin, Dive Rite Nitek and Nitek Plus (watch size).

I,m new here so bear with me a bit, I,m not new to the ocean. I have been reading a number of posts and a lot of consideration is given to the amount of bottom time one can get from his or her computers programing. The fact is that the computer doesnt set one thing thats all too important, the divers physiology. Thats perhaps one of the most important things in this venue and it doesnt get much attention. As we collect experiance we also collect years and they cant be erased no matter how hard we try. A fifty year old,s body just isnt as effecient as a 20 year olds so as we age we need to keep those factors in the back of our minds.I have had the really sobering experiance of being on a charter boat when someone pushed the envelope and it did in fact take his life. Do some exercise, practice safe diving and have a kick ass summer.
