I am considering the purchase of a Suunto Cobra 2 dive computer. I would appreciate any feedback from current owners and users of this dive computer. Would you recommend it to a friend? Would you buy it again knowing what you now know?

Thanks.

I've dove with people who used a Suunto and their NDL was way less than mine. I found it annoying.

I have a Mosquito- same software I believe- and find it easy and reliable to use. It does Nitrox, you can download dive profiles. Never had difficulties with short NDL compared with other people I've dived with.

all my dive buddys use the cobra and cobra 2 and love them i use the vyper its close to the cobra or just the same asfar as i can tell. it has to be a good unit the dive shop has it for all students and rental as well got to be tough and reliable. just my input..

What computer where you using in comparison?

I have two... Genesis ReactPro which is very liberal on bottom time, and DiveRite Duo which is about halfway between the Suunto and the Genesis.

The Suunto will be more conservative than a pelagic computer (Oceanic, Aeris, Sherwood) since it uses a different algorithm. More conservative is not necessarily a bad thing, but it will reduce your bottom time if you have any fast ascents and possibly in cases of reverse profiles.

I would definitely recommend the Cobra2 over the Cobra since you can change your RBGM settings and also it has a deep stop program which is optional.

As for the digital compass - I have had some trouble using mine - you have to keep it VERY level or it won't work. It definitely takes some practice.

This is a good computer overall. Definitely get the quick disconnect so you can take it with you even if you leave your regs hanging in a gear locker...

I have not used the Cobra 2, but have dove for the last two years with the Suunto Stinger. When we bought ours, we looked at the Cobra but decided to go with a wrist style. I have to say, I love my computer and find it extremely easy to use.

As people say and you will read, Suunto seems to have a more conservative bottom time calculation (which is not a problem for me - I would rather be conservative than bent). From what I have experienced diving with others, the difference is not really noticeable until deeper dives and even then it was a difference is 1-2 minutes at depth of 120 ft for us.

The quick disconnect on any console mounted computer is worth it. If you read in the gear section, there are some reports of computers turning themselves on in the cargo holds of planes and it is recommended that you carry the computer on board.

I'm looking for a dive computer to replace a borrowed comp. I don't like the wireless one I've been using so I tried a Suunto Cobra when I had the chance last year. I loved it and on the shallow dives I uses it on it didn't limit my time at all.

I'm considering a Cobra 2 since I liked the Cobra so much.

But I have a few questions. This is a pretty major toy investment for me and I'm concerned that as I dive more challenging sites this comp might not scale well. One thing I'm concerned wit is that a friend has mentioned this comp is not a full deco unit like some of the Aeris and other units.

The Suunto Site (can't link, not enough posts) seems to indicate there are 'deep dive' features built in.

So I guess in a nutshell what I want to know is at what point of dive expertise is this comp going to become inappropriate and need replaced?

I love my cobra2 best investment I have made and extremely simple to use. So yes I recommend it!
