Hello,
I am new to diving and will be getting padi OW certified in a few weeks. I'm only 13 years old, so I am looking into getting my own wetsuit for my check out dives because I have a feeling that they wont have a wetsuit in my size. I plan on diving a lot so I should probably have my own anyway. I did the discover scuba while I was on vacation in cancun and I really enjoyed it so I know that scuba diving is something that I will stick with. I live in new england and I would be diving in water around 65degrees. Now if I were to get a 5 mm jon (thats what I was told it was called, not sure if that is the correct name) and a 5 mm jacket to go over that, plus 5 mm boots, gloves and a hood will I be warm enough? Thank you in advance

You'd be surprised the range of sizes a store or instructor will have. I'd make sure they don't have a rental that will fit before buying your own.

As for the Farmer John you are asking about, it should be comfortable. It'll depend on how well you tolerate the cold as well as the suit. With the overlapping of the two pieces, you'll get more insulation over the center of your body which helps greatly. You may want to see if you can rent one or get a used one.

We regularly dive a natural spring that stays at 64 degs F year round. The standard suit is a 7mm farmer john. Some people are comfortable, while others get chilly. I'd be afraid that you'd get cold pretty quick in a 5mm suit. Get with your dive shop to see what they recommend for the site and see if they don't have a size you can try.

Welcome to SCUBA and have fun on your OW dives!

I get cold in a 2 piece 3 mill in 72 degree water, so a 7 mil for that cold would be a must.

Be sure to get a hood, and maybe even gloves!
