i'm staying in playa del carmen. Its real easy to do the dives right off playa and only 10-20 minute boat rides from there.

However, I've never dove off cozumel. I do have the option of taking a boat from cozumel which will run about 50 minutes of so to dive sites. they will take me to santa rosa wall and Paso Del Cedral.

Are the dives off playa as good or almost as good as dives off cozumel.

I am going in 10 days.

thanks.

You should not miss diving in Cozumel. It is completley different and much more majestic than Playa.

However, I suggest booking with a Cozumel operator and coming across on the ferry for a day or two. You really should dive Palancar if you want to see what Cozumel is so famous for!

thanks for info.

My primary reason for heading to playa is my family vacation. i'm only diving
one two tank morning. so i want to stick with one of the few operators tankha who go right from playa. don't want the hassle of transfers, etc.

if diving of playa del carmen you should consider diving at the cinote caverns...great cave dive , you are escorted by a cave diving master...and really never leave the mouth of the caverns....that will make you want to try the devil throat.....cozumel is great but if on the main land ask you shop for the options that are around....the walls at cozumel are fantastic diving also, but explore the options where you are...before using time up to venture to other areas....see ya` under

I would second Christi's advice; at the moment there is no comparison between conditions at Santa Rosa and the deeper parts of palancar. If you're staying in playa, it's very simple to catch an early ferry. I think they start at 6:00 AM, and run hourly. You could find a dive op on Cozumel, do a great morning dive, and be back on the ferry at 1:00. It's $10 each way, and I bet the playa dive ops will charge at least $20 more to take you to the coz side than would the dive ops on the island.

Regarding the cenote dives, I did that this past week for the first time as the Cozumel harbor was closed to small boats for a couple of days. I loved it and would highly recommend it; but it was almost exactly double the price of a typical 2 tank dive in Cozumel. If you don't mind spending the money it's a great experience.

YES
Definitely worth the trip. Palancar would be my first choice.

Just my dos pesos.

One thing to keep in mind is that the channel crossing in a small boat can be pretty rough if the seas are uncooperative.

Heck, it can be pretty rough on the ferry sometimes! Especially after a long night in Playa Del Carmen with no sleep.....uh, or so I've heard.

Everyone who has posted is right on the mark. You simply cannot be that close to Cozumel and not go. As you weave trough the complex formations of of any of the Palancars, the word "Wow"" will be going through your mind constantly.
