About 10 years ago we were doing something like this at The Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Fl. We were taking kids that were wheelchair bound and letting them experience SCUBA with all of the gear a diver would use, except the BC was designed to float on the surface. The kids wore a wetsuit, mask, fins and a supply of air that they would breath through a regulator. The swam with sharks, turtles, eels and 1,000's of fish.

That is very cool. do they still do that program at the aquarium there? We actually have a team in the Tampa area. Diveheart board member, Corissa Leung runs the program there in pools, helping people with disabilities escape gravity. If the aquarium does still have an emersion program, do you think they would let people of all abilities participate? Corissa can be reached here corissa.leung@diveheart.org

No. Unfortunately, the program stopped around the time of Covid and has not been reintroduced. If you go to The Florida Aquarium website, you can find a type of replacement called Sea Trek. Small children can do it with direct supervision. Please call first and talk to someone in reference to the children's ability's before scheduling to make sure that it's compatible. This is run by the diving staff and not volunteers.
