I'm not sure that this is the correct forum for this, but I'm not sure what is so here goes:
The Cook Islands joined with French Polynesia to create the world's largest shark sanctuary. It is 6.7 million square kilometers - roughly the size of Australia! In this region, there is no shark fishing and the possession and sale of shark products is banned. The story appeared in the 20 / 27 Dec issue of Nature.
A related story indicates that elephant poaching in Africa continues unabated, in fact increasing substantially. 1,500 pieces (tusks) of African ivory were seized in Malaysia. I thought it might be of interest to the wildlife enthusiasts out there.
