I've been certified for about 5 years now and have obviously talked alot to family about my adventurtes, including showing them all my gear. My mom of course worries for my safety so I have tried to soothe that by detailing all the redundancies in my rig. My older brother (about to turn 30) has always been interested but has many other hobbies so never got into diving. Well lately he has been talking about being interested in learning. He and his wife just got back from a cruise in the southern caribbean (I talked to him last night) and they decided to take a discover scuba course for one of their first excursions. Sounds like it was a shore dive following a controlled session in a pool. My entire family grew up in the water so it comes as no surprise to me that he was "instantly hooked" and left wanting more. They then proceeded to sign up for another discover class at their next stop just to get back in the water. This time it was a nice reef dive from a boat. Once again he was thrilled, and is now at home in MI saying " I'm getting certified asap". The funniest thing was talking about my DIR setup, and my 7' primary. His first comment was " man, now I know why you have that long hose, I hated doing a buddy breath with the person 6" from my face, would have loved to get them a nice distance away"
. Looking forward to seeing him get certified and doing some dives with my big bro!!
