The buffing kits used for clearing car headlights work very well to get rid of scratches in plastic gauges.
 
Neil, I know you fixed the problem but I had one more suggestion that worked on mine. I went to the beauty supply store and bought a fingernail file that has three fine grits to it. They are very very fine. You just work from the lower grit to the highest and it is then polished quite nice. Just like new. You might have some explaining to do why you were in the beauty supply store though!!

I replace my lens annually, since it does get scratched rather easily. I guess the cover is not that resilient to scratches, but it does protect the face quite well from abuse.
