Willie Shoemaker, the famous jockey, died today (10-12-03) at age 72, in his sleep.
He rode for 41 years and won 8883 times.

I just read about the Shoe and his passing. My heart goes out to the racing community (of which I was a part of for 10+ years) of the loss. I saw his last win aboard Beau Genius at Gulfstream Racetrack in 1990 when he did his farewell tour.

His ride on Fedinand was nothing short of spectacular. He will be missed. He was a great horseman and an awesome rider.
