I'm looking at refurbishing a canister light. After researching various issues, I'm not sure why we try so hard to waterproof canister lights.

Sonnenschein gel cells seem to be waterproof to 30m (manufactuer's figure.) I have been told that the halogen downlight globes used in a lot of canister light heads don't crush or fail when the heads flood.

Salt water isn't all that conductive. 12v pushes quite little current through seawater.

Corrosion is a problem, but don't we wash all our gear after every dive anyway?

For diving within normal recreational limits, why don't we allow our lights to flood, and then wash them afterwards?

Thanks,

Lyle
