Who has been to the Hoskins area of New Britain, PNG?

1. Is it worthwhile to go to PNG to dive? To snorkle? We have about 3 or 4 days total.

2. Is there a better PNG area than New Britain -- that is easily accessible by air or boat from Port Moresby?

3. We are vacation-type divers, and are looking for nice coral and critters. We are thinking of staying at Walindi Plantation Resort, and diving from charter boats. Any comments?

4. How does this area compare with -- say -- diving in the Yasawa Islands in Fiji? Or, the leeward islands in the Carribean? Or, the portion of the Great Barrier Reef close to Cairns? (We have no time for a 4-day liveaboard.)

Thanks very, very, much!

I was on a liveaboard from Walindi but did several dives that are regularly done by the house boats that go to the local reefs. These thumbnails are from what I am pretty sure were local reefs. The diving is fine for vacation divers, warm clear water and I experienced little current close to Walindi - depth might have got to 20m but I don't think went beyond it.

The reefs were way better than anything I have seen on a day boat from Cairns or snorkeling in Fiji (but not the Yasawas).

Part of the attraction is virtually no other divers other than your party. I enjoyed Walindi too, good food and nice people. There is however always the risk in PNG that your flight might be delayed a day - I guess that risk exists everywher but in PNG it is bigger..

I have not dived elsewhere in PNG -so no comparison available, but I'll be going back

I definitely choose New Britain over Loloata as we have dove both. New Britain, landing in Hoskins staying at Walindi and also diving StarDancer.

Hello Nolad --

Thanks again for your helpful post on PNG!

I am planning a trip to Walinde in August, and I have some more questions.

If you would permit me to phone you , please email your phone number to gunnel@letstravel-sm.com. I am in Hawaii just now -- 6 hours earlier than you.

Thank you very much!

Diving Kimbe Bay is fantastic - worked there for nearly 5 years The Yasawa Islands in Fiji, leeward islands in the Carribean/Great Barrier Reef close to Cairns are absolutely no comparison to the diving to be had out of walindi, Restorf Island fanatastic with one of the biggest gorgoean fans I have ever seen ever ( over 10 feet high and 18 feet wide), Susans Reef one of the most photographed reefs with the red corals sea whips, Inglis Shoals/Joelles and South Emma great seam mounts with both small stuff and bigger pelagic's that come in August can windy with seas a little rough. Snorkelling can be a little limited depending on what reefs you go to..... Certainly a spot with excellent bio-diversity and colour (Kirsty Janes with wonderful colours on top from the hard corals - also great snorkelling)

Also spent 6 years in Port Moresby - Diving out of POM is also fantastic and severely under rated with great sites like end bommie/suzies/baldwins bommie/quales/Pai II/ Pacific Gas etc.............

You are right how can one ever forget George. An awesome creature.

Rocks. Great diving and great staff, (diving and non diving). After diving quiet a few places around the world there are three places that I want to go back to, Walindi,Bali and Palau

David, I thought you said Wakatobi was the finest diving you have ever done?....LOL
