Which is a better choice.....

I know this has been asked a million times already so please bare with me. I am asking the pro's here for advice. I am an absolute amature when it comes to camara's. My delema is this, I have the oppertunity to purchase either a Nikon D5000 or the Cannon T1i at an incredable price (Well below market Value). Each one is new (still in the box). Also each comes with the extra Telephoto lens. I am tossed as to which is the better deal. I have shot point and shoot for years and would love to upgrade. thank you all in advance.

Any advice is welcomed.

Actually i have no idea, i would go Nikon but thats a personal preference and not technical or quality related.
If you think about using it underwater prepare for a hefty bill...
Using a DSLR rig for underwater photos is a very expensive hobby...
