If money were not the object which housing would you buy for the Canon 10D ? I've perhaps read too many reviews as I am now completely confused....The Ikelite obviously has the cost advantage whilst the Subal looks very slick but isn't exactly cheap....At the end of the day I want the most customer friendly housing - what experiences have you guys had ??

Initially I'm thinking about using a 14-24mm and 50mm Sigma lens.

I'm confused......If money is no object cost advantage is irrelevant. Without a doubt the Subal. If money is an object, then Ikelite.

Customer friendly - Ike is known for his customer service. Subal is in Europe.

Might want to look into whether either manufacturer has a port for the Sigma 12-24. I don't think so, but I am not sure. I believe it has a fairly large circumference that is hard to house (or they haven't gotten around to it yet)

I'm using the Ikite housing for my EOS 50E. I'm very suprised to see how may ports are available for different canon lenses. Last year I've bought a 100 mm Macro lens with a port for it. However, using the macro lens in autofocus mode was not working perfectly. Last month I was very pleased to see that Ikelite made a new port for this lens with manual mode setting. If someone is looking for reliable underwater houses which also manufactures new ports, I don't have to look further on. What I also understand from Ikelite, is that alu housing can provide some problems with condensed water (specially in cold water). The last advise I want you to consider, is if the different handlebars/knobs on Subal are maintenance free like Ikelite's are..

I wanted the Ikelight housing but Got Tired of being told it was comming out next month... I heard that song and dance for about 6 months so I bought the Sea & Sea. Its great. Its the first and only housing I have ever owend so I do not have anything to compare it to. The price is in between the Subal and the Ikelight. I am using a Canon fixed 20mm with the large dome... I am about to purchae 2 y90 autos for it...

My only concern is that CANON just anounced the 20D... And NO i am not kidding.

If youi have any specific questions do not hesitate to contact me.

So which Value is best? I have a 10D, am new to diving, but have been doing photography for 35 years. I'm concerned about the best housing to put my $2K worth of camera gear in. Not to mention strobes, trays, etc.

PS - my diving friends warned me that my scuba gear was only the start.... :censored:

Might want to hold off and trade up to a 20D..... the new 10-22 mm lens (the best WA that Canon has offered) only fits the 300D and 20D....

Not sure why Canon is abandoning 10D users

Chris

the new lens you are talking about has the new EF-s mount which is the same as the EF mount but now the rear element extends back into the body alittle bit, which is why the mount sticks out a little more on the 20D.

trust me canon is not abandoning 10D users, the efs lenses are designed for the average consumer who doesnt mind a all plastic lense where people who really care will buy better built lense.

FWIW

If money were not the object, then I would go with the Subal 10d housing. I just delivered one to a customer of mine, and after playing with this set up, I myself am jealous. The housing construction is very nice, and extremely durable. I really like the two locking latch mechanisms. With these latches, you know whether or not your housing is closed all the way.

The other great thing about this housing is its compactness. The housing is designed with the curves of the camera body. This is not a large, boxy housing.

Best of luck, Mike

Jonathan, I have to disagree completely with Scuba Eric...

I have a Subal and an Ikelite housings... wow what a difference !! – Starting with the price, you get what you pay for !! No joke – Quality.
Machined seawater resistant aluminum alloy body, finished hard coat anodized.

The finishes are superb on the Subal, unlike the Ikelite where I had to bend some of the knobs/controls to reach and operate my camera properly !

I know you don't want the cost to be the driving factor in your decision, but still consider value to be important, so the only answer is to get a Subal.

It is custom built for the 10D ONLY and it fits like a glove, like no other housing !
It also has the most complete controls to operate the camera underwater 23 of them !

From my experience Ikelite plastic housings has provide me some problems with condensed water (specially in cold water / hot weather). It is a pain in the neck when you have to wait almost 20min. for your Ikelite housing to get rid of the condensation after you started the dive. some times it won't and you end up carrying the housing all the dive for nothing.

I still have my (older) Subal housing with less scratches then my (1 year old) Ikelite. What a difference in performance too !

Oh, and the ports available for Subal are a vast variety too. I do have similar wide angle lens too.

Cheers,
