So I'm hitched and need somewhere to go. My wife is thinking some sort of over the water bungalow, has anyone done this? I wanna hear about your experience and what time of year is best. I only get one honeymoon in this lifetime so I figure this isn't the time to be cheap. I don't want to cut any corners and risk sacrificing a good time. I was thinking Tahiti or maybe Fiji, all ideas are welcome so let's hear what you got!

Thanks!

Billy

Billy,

Congrats on getting married, best of luck to you and your new bride.

If you wife is into diving, head to CoCo View Resort on Roatan. You can get a bungalow on the water and get to go diving. I have a co-worker that went to Bora Bora and stayed in the bungalows. He mentioend that they would snorkel near the bungalows and had a great time. I'm not sure which resort he stayed at but can ask if you'd like.

Thanks Phil, it's been a while. Unfortunately she is not a diver so going to a resort that is tailored to diving is pretty much out. Somewhere domesticated with shopping and other ways to carelessly spend my money would be more to her liking :)

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out those locations!

Congratulations on gettin' "hitched"...

My wife and I honeymooned in Bora Bora before we were certified. The over-water bungalow route is truly amazing (as a note - the island itself can be pretty heavily infested with mosquitoes...so I do recommend an over-water stay), and the island is still probably the most beautiful place we have been.

Last year we also went to the Jean-Michelle Cousteau Resort in Fiji...and that was probably our overall favorite, relaxing vacation to date.

Honestly - tough call...they are both on my "have to go there before you die list"...Fiji is probably cheap right now with the coup driving down tourism...so it might be a good time to check it out.

Both will cater to divers and non-divers...the exact resort we stayed at in Bora Bora was destroyed by a tsunami...so I can't speak from experience about the current resort offerings...the Cousteau resort ( http://www.fijiresort.com ) is amazing.

The good news is you're in a win/win situation...you and your wife will enjoy either one.

Billy, Two words.

Bora Bora.

She will have a great time as will you!
Congratulations!

We stayed in Bora Bora for 10 days on our honeymoon. There wasn't much to do except relax, swim and dive which is what we wanted. The honeymoon really is a great time to just spend time with each other. However, if she is into shopping, there really wasn't much there in terms of shopping. It truly was paradise but you should be prepared for the cost as it is not cheap, especially if you are going to stay in the overwater bungalows. I don't regret going there, but it definitely put a dent in my wallet.

Congratulations on your marriage. I'm sure that you guys will have a blast whereever you decide to go. My only advice is to do it sooner rather than later. I figured I would delay the honeymoon for a few months after we got married, but I didn't realize that this until later that kinda bummed her out although she never complained. So, I ended up planning the honeymoon the week before our wedding, and we left for the honeymoon a week after the wedding. I do believe that there is something special about going on your honeymoon soon after your wedding. I know people who've been married for a year and still have not yet gone on their honeymoon as life just gets in the way...

Married? YOU?!?! Is she INSANE?!?!?

Congratulations my friend!! :monkeydan

Sorry, no advice about honeymoon. Well, maybe some...did you and your dad have that conversation about birds and bees?

Hey Billy,

I would highly recommend looking into a cruise ship. On Carribean cruise's you can dive (usually two tank mornig or one tank afternoon) while she relaxes, they also have great snorkeling (you could even try a "resort" dive course with her), the food is top notch 5 star and endless (and included). She will have shopping opportunites galore both on the various islands and on board the ship. You get to see (and dive) several islands while only unpacking once. On board casino and entertainment. Just make sure you get a room with at least a balcony, worth the extra cost.

Good Luck!

Josh

If you're looking for topside things to do, plus great diving for you, and over the water bungalows, you might consider Thailand.

It has the added benefit of being relatively cheap. But that's cheap in the "why waste money?" sense, not cheap in the cucaracha sense. Fascinating culture, tons to things to do and see, warm water and fantastic diving. It just happens to be cheap also.

And my next big vacation, slated for sometime in 2008. :) Lots of research done by my wife (who doesn't dive), so guaranteed female-approved. If you want more info, just drop me a line.

Congratulations Billy!

I wish you both a long and happy life together!

(Sorry, no honeymoon advice from moi. Ours was so long ago I wouldn't know where to start!)
