Planning a family dive trip to the Similians in Feb 2008. Because of creature comforts for the young (13 & 15yos) lady divers, we are opting to stay onshore at night for post-dive massages/buffet dinners.

Any updates or recommendations on the dive scene in Khao Lak? We are quite dazzled by the range of daytrip boats. The Sea Bees Stingray looks almost decadent. The Boonsung & Premchai wrecks sounds ideal for checkup/revision dives. As we are dealing with time constraints, which two sites should we do a day trip basis given a choice between the Similians, Koh Bon, the Surins or Richelieu?

Curiously, also just found an interesting trip offered by Wetzonedivers to the Rajaprabha artificial lake (Wetzonedivers, Tauchen in Khao Lak (Thailand) - Süsswassertauchen). Has anyone done this trip?

Ko Bon is probably your best choice for a daytrip from Kao Lak. It offers great diving and often has very decent visibility as well. Not all that an easy dive when the current runs and often a place where thermoclines come and go. Then again; you may get lucky and see a manta flying by...

The wrecks at Khao Lak are nice too but often vis is poor and there's very-very-very little coral. Not unusual to encounter zebra (leopard) sharks here and a great variety of critters (spindle cowries, ornate ghostpipe fish, nudi's, estuarine stonefish, porcelain crabs, shrimp-goby combinations etc.)

Seabees stingray gets to the dive sites quickly and they don't rush to get back to shore, it's a nice trip, better than crowded South Siam. But there are loads of other daytrip boats from Khao Lak that I don't know.

I was at Koh Bon recently and the dive site was very busy, lots of liveboards, just bad luck I think. Currents were strong too. Try to avoid Koh Bon on Wednesdays and Sundays when South Siam boats are there with 50+ divers.

I was also at Richelieu and saw a whale shark!

Similan reefs might be better if your family are joining you to snorkel.

I love the Boonsung Wreck. It's a very good night dive.

Just came back from Khao Lak (8 Jan) and we did 2 daytrips with IQ Dive iQ-DIVE Khao Lak - Scuba Diving Khao Lak, dive Similan islands
Did a daytrip to the Simalins. Pickup from hotel at 8, breakfast on boat, 2h40min trip to simalins, 2 dives with 1h30 lunch break, which was great because they had a onboard cook who prepared it. Returned to Khao Lak around 6pm. We were about 30 divers, but divided into groups of 5-6 with a DM. So it did not feel crowded because the groups went in 1 one after another and did their own thing. Dive time of 60mins or first person to run out of air. Both our dives were about 55mins. Both good dives not crowded as we were the only boat at the site.

Then we booked a daytrip to Richlieu Rock, which was redirected to Ko Tachai and Ko Bon because of 2m swells as RR. For the farther trips they use a fast catemaran(10 divers + 2 DM's), so after 2 hours we reached Ko Tachai... Horrible dive!!! Supposed to be a 60 min dive, but 10 minutes into the dive the already strong current turned nasty. So the dive consisted out of hiding from the current behind bolders and hanging on to rocks. Not much fish life to see, because I guess they were hiding from the current as well. Needless to say after 35mins everyone was out of air from fighting the current and we were hanging on to the anchor line for our safety stop like flags in the wind - at 5 metres the current was unbelevably strong. Althoug a bad dive, it was an experience I'll never forget. We then had lunch and did our 2nd dive at Ko Bon. Very crowded - at least 6 Live Aboards/Big day boats, and divers left right and center in the water. But luckily a very mild current so compared to the first dive this was a breeze and we saw a few nice things.

In hindsight with our time constraints, we would have done 2 daytrips to the simalins and not have bothered with RR, Ko Bon and Ko Tachai. Then we would have had 4 good dives, instead of 2 good ones, 1 ok, and 1 bad one.

The daytrips tend to be booked full during the peak season, so booking a dive today for tomorrow might not always be posible. I booked our dives with IQ beforehand via email.

Hope this helps.
Adriaan.

Thanks Adriaan. No whales/mantas? :)

Will book in advance for that Similians trip now.

Unfortunately no whales or mantas - but when we went to Ko Bon then Dm said that there was a manta the day before...

Just got back from our trip to Khao Lak diving the Similians over the Lunar New Year holidays. Dived three days at Similians (Island 8 & 9), Koh Bon and Richelieu Rock.

The diving got off to a very bad start with Sea Bees to the Similians. Fearing the crowds, we had made a prior booking with them before our arrival because they were recommended by this board and appear to be well regarded. We soon regretted making our deposit without checking them out in person. Sea Bees was to be one of the most expensive options to the Similians at 6,300 bh (US$200) for trip, nature park fees and gear hire when most other outfits only charge 4,900 - 5,000bh (US$150) all inclusive for a speedboat trip. The Sea Bees boat is also a slow catamaran which takes at least 2 hours to hit the Similians while the speedboats will make the trip in less than an hour. Although the boat was quite spacious and efficiently run, there was little to be done to alleviate the stress of jumping into the water with 34 other people. Despite being charged preminum prices, we were not impressed with the meagre food selection and soft drinks/beer are only available for an extra charge.

The day did not improve with the insipid dive sites we were dropped into at the Similians. Our DM later confessed that we were made to dive in the same sites together with the snorkellers because the inflatable onboard was not working. To make a bad day worse, we made to wait in the open sea for half an hour because the Sea Bees boat was on the other side of the island picking up the snorkellers. To his credit, our DM was quick to reassure the 13yo diver in our group who was distressed about floating away to India. Needless to say, she and her older sister refused to dive again this rest of the trip because of their experiences with Sea Bees.

Our trip improved the next day diving with Khao Lak Scuba Adventures (KSA) to Koh Bon. We were excited to play with the mantas (95% chance of spotting mantas, they claimed!) and was happy to try a speedboat instead. The trip was quite affordable at 5100 bh (US$160) all inclusive. We made the journey to Koh Bon in less than an hour and the boat was comfortable even with 18 divers. The atmosphere onboard was also more warm and friendly compared to the chilly Teutonic silence on the Sea Bees the day before. Koh Bon was stunning with great visibility and a huge variety of fish and coral. We had seriously enjoyed our time with the lovely Vicky exploring the sites. These were good dives that would have been spectacular if the mantas had made their appearance. We were unlucky as it was the first day in the week where they were off sick.

For our last day, we were booked on Wicked Diving to dive at Richelieu Rock on a speedboat they share with Big Blue Diving. We were quite impressed with Wicked the minute we stepped into their friendly shop on the main street in Khao Lak. One of the boat staff, Klaus actually took the time to patiently explain to a bunch of noobies about the various dive sites in the Similians and what to look out for out there. The awesome Wicked service continued with one of their friendly DMs, Kristian from Sweden, doing a fantastic job guiding us through at Richelieu despite the strong currents and the underwater horde. The Big Blue speedboat is an excellent option for day trippers as the silent fast boat only takes an hour from the mainland. With the flexibility of speed, we had the site to ourselves most of the time in between the LOBs dives. Richelieu was easily our favourite dive of the weekend with the colourful soft corals and amazing stuff. No whale sharks, no mantas but lots of little critters for the macro lovers.

With so many outfits in Khao Lak offering the same options, we all feel strongly it is that personal touch that sets one dive shop above all the others. We will be back next time to dive again with the fantastic people at Wicked who also offers overnight diving in Similians/Koh Bon and Richelieu with an option to spend the night camping on a Similian island underneath the stars on solid ground.

PS the local dive bar is Scuba Groupies along the main street. Best place to get tips on diving and manta sightings.
