Hi Scubaboard Community,

I want to go diving in late August or September. Warm water. Where is the best spot to go? Is the Caribbean out of the question? Thanks !

Anyplace SOUTH of the 12th parallel is usually safe during Hurricane Season in the Caribbean. Frequently, that means Bonaire & the other islands in the Netherland Antilles.

Bonne chance,

Have you considered the Pacific? Hawaii's typhoon season is less regular than in the Caribbean, so late August would probably be a safe bet. I was in Kona in early July and weather conditions seemed pretty stable then. Australia or Tahiti (maybe Fiji, but I've heard it's not safe there) are probably nice in August, not having been their myself.

If you are refering to the political unrest in Fiji, then thats about 3 years old....(unless of course, I have missed something new).

the A-B-C islands work (as was mentioned). Hawaii of course. You could even try SoCal, our water temps are in the mid-60s by August and we haven't had a hurricane in a Looooong time...

hmm....why is the building shaking now :)

The actual even in Fiji happened in 2000, but I've heard from someone who actually lived for a short time in Suva that the city's still in chaos to this day. I'm not sure how much of that is true, I guess we'll just have to ask Uncle Pug when he gets back from there (sorry about the side convo).

Yep, have to agree...it's Bonaire all the way! The visibility is excellent in the summer and out of the hurricane belt! Your best bet for airfare would be Air Jamaica Sat- Sat, or fly any airline to Aruba then BonairExpress, or American to San Juan then to Bonaire. Any questions let me know...oh yeah the shore diving is spectacular and CHEAP!

I went to the keys after surviving the 2nd hurricane up in Brooksville, FL last year. Only people at the hotel until we were evacuated three days later for the 3rd hurricane. No other dive boats were around and the conditions were surprisingly good. Live on the wild side.

Unfortunately I've been back since early November 2004. :D

I didn't see any chaos or political unrest during my 11 day stay but then we weren't roaming the streets of Suva either. We did roam the streets of Nadi for a half day though and all appeared to be well.

I don't think there is any problem at all.
