New to diving, want to learn all about marine and plant life. What are the best reference books I can get and if they can not be obtained at a local library then where? I have been searching my local book stores and library and I find nothing specifically pertaining to divers.

The Humann series is an essential tool for all divers. The best for your area (to start with) are the Caribbean series.
Check with East coast universities - in our area (Gulf of Mexico) for example, the Universtiy of South Alabama's Bob Shipp has an excellent guide - I suspect UNC probably has something similar.
Good luck.
