I live in a modest house... 4 bedrooms, combined living room/Dining room and a smallish kitchen. Of there are few rooms that do not have something dive related in them, and we also have 18 (soon to be 20) data drops throughout. We have lived here for 14 years (almost) and have done very little to the house since our initial move in.

Last year we decided to replace the vinyl I laid down at the beginning with real tile. What was I thinking? The vinyl floor I took up back then took about a half hour, including scraping ALL of the old glue. Somehow, I think I must have cared more than the "professionals" because getting my vinyl up was an all day affair, and then some. We have ordered the tile (picking it up in a few minutes) but the more we thought about all of this, the more we wanted new cabinets... SO we trotted out and started looking at cabinets. Now, I am not one to let others into my house to fix things, so now I have a ton of cabinets to build and a partial wall to break down and re-do. We also have to decide on a new counter top (I want Corian, my wife wants cheap) and the list keeps growing AAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, what was initiated as a "two day" job, will now take at least a week or three. So, if you don't see me as much on the board... you know where to find me!

I just redid my counter tops last week (or should I say I had them redone) I went with the quartz top. It wasn't all that much and it will last forever. Next year will be the floors I hate the rug we have now and the vinyl is starting to show wear. My wife made me buy a new wall unit this year so she kill the budget with that. Good luck with the tile. Your knees will hate in the morning and forget about sex you'll be far to beat up. Buy extra for the booboos. I made plenty when I did mine last time. The easiest part will be the cabinets. ANyway have fun and you have my sympathy.

I never have this problem. One of the things that I find translates very well from Systems Engineering is Program Management. It's all about requirements, requirements, requirements followed by design, budget and schedule. That way when you get to the construction phase you do it once, right and fast. Fortunatly my new house in Texas is perfect with no projects needed, but back in VA almost every room in the 40 year old house needed something done to it. It was nice to be able to do it myself or be able to work with a contractor and get it all nailed down so the work was on time and on budget.

Home Improvements do wonders for the mind. While it is nice to have somebody else do the work, there is something said for a job well done by yourself. Good luck, and have fun....BTW, I have learned that tools don't mind if you "accidently" cuss at them when they screw up! LOL

Good hook there netdoc...

I thought this thread was about the moderator who unfairly pulled one of my posts - LOL

Now related to your post - Did you ever see the Movie "The Money Pit" With Tom Hanks and Shelley Duvall - Now that was a movie everybody who owns a house or has had to do repairs can relate to.

When the Bathtub falls through the floor and Tom Hanks starts to melt down..I was killing myself laughing

Good Luck

Funny, Funny movie...

After three years of living in a house (a modest, 55 year old house) that was essentially painted with a broom moments before we bought it by the previous owner, we finally wearied of looking at it - so over Christmas vacation we decided to paint.

As anyone knows, prep is 90% of the job, and the actual painting is just the anticlimatic finish.

Well, its Spring. I have completed the Master suite, the alcove, hallway and the bathrooms - essentially half the job.

There is so much hair, tape and crapola that was painted over that the prep is taking 3 - 5 times longer for each room than anticipated.... its unreal. Scraping, sanding, filling, heat-gunning, etc. I go diving so I can breathe dust-free air for a change!

The painting its self became more ambitious as well - 1 color for the ceiling, another for the walls, lining the window boxes in a third color of high gloss, doing the baseboards and trim in yet another color, painting the doors (new walls with old doors? please...) adding moulding, replacing some other...

Call me Eldon.

I may finish my Christmas vacation project by summer. :bonk:

Maybe.

Gee, and here I thought the title of this thread was about me!
Ha!
Hey Pete, I can use a new counter top too when you're done, and I like Corian!

You now DS...

Its bad when I hijack my own thread like that, huh??? :D

My next door neighbor is re-doing parts of his home as well, and we plan to celebrate the completion of both by watching the "Money Pit" together. We won't watch it before, because it will be too close to home.

Home remodeling is like therapy to me. Granted I have a brand new house so my remodeling is limite to painting walls. But still its fun.

What I have outsourced is yard work and house cleaning. We have cleaning people every week. What a difference that makes.
