i dont want to go to university...i hav a house in greece and i want to move there and start a scuba diving business after i work for a bit to save money...this is going to disappoint a lot of ppl but, i think its worth it...hav anyh of u gals done anything like that and hav u regretted it?

pheww...thats a huge descion! If I were you I would go to University and major in Business management. You wont only learn about business but you can take other courses too. Perhaps in Marine Bio or something. If your business fails then you will always have somthing to fall back on, get some experience before commiting.

Better be a dive shop with an internet outlet.......... Competition is getting stiff in this market.

Question: How do you make a small fortune in the dive business?
Answer: Start out with a LARGE one.

It's an old but (sadly) true saying. Been there, done that, got a T-shirt and a hat. ;)

We ran our own sail/dive charter in the Bahamas for about 2 years. It cost us much more than even our most "conservative" business plan thought it would. Although we never made any money (in fact, we pretty much lost it all) it was an amazing experience. But not one everyone would look back upon so kindly.

Frankly, you need to have a lot more experience & business acumen before you should even THINK about starting your own scuba biz. The only way to do that is to go to school and get the tools that will allow you to make the right decisions.

Keep the dream alive, but get the tools to make it work otherwise it will become a nightmare.

Pax,

moving to tioman in january to run my parent's resort. hope to reopen our dive shop with a suitable instructor. let's hope for the best. good luck to you, it sounds great!

I have thought about taking the summer off from the universtiy and going to Greece or somewhere warm and helping with diving. Like on a Live abord, or Resort type thing. There isn't much like that over here in the Pacific North West. I want to dive somewhere where I can see 30 feet infront of me, and the water is actualy warm.
If you choose to go to Greece Best of luck to you. If having a dive shop over there is what you really want to do then the people will understand.

Good Luck!!

jewel - I dont know how old you are - young enough to go to university but old enough to own a house?
and you live in toronto?
do you speek Greek?
have you worked or lived in Greece before?
are you entitled to?

one compromise suggestion is to move to Greece to study (eg Business Administration or Marine Biology as already suggested).
get a feel for the area.
learn the language.
work out if your business is really required.
spend a few more years growing up so that you are chilled out (not meant derogatively - it's just age/experience/time makes one feel a bit more stable).
work out if this is still really what you want to do.
spend your time at university (how would you fund this and/or setting up a shop by the way?) getting more dive qualifications/experience under your belt.
maybe train as an instructor in more than one different agency.
through university try and get corporate sponsorship if you are good enough at diving.

then when you graduate (it's only a few years - feels like a lifetime at 18 but trust me it isnt!) you are well equipped to set up your own business.

and you will have amassed credit & visas & reputation with financial institutes just by being there long enough - trust me, it's hard relocating to the other side of the world.

Jewel-

Wow, if I am reading your birthdate correctly, then you have several wonderful years ahead of you to fulfill your dreams. I can completely understand your reluctance to go into university and spend what might seem like an age to get a degree. After 7 solid of going to school and work, straight out of high school, to get my Master's degree, I am exhausted. But, I can now look back and say to myself, "wow, that is over and now I can really get into the fun stuff" (like paying off school loans! :)). Seriously, you may regret not getting the degree. Definitely hold on to your dreams (preaching to myself as well), but make sure you have the right equipment (school, experience) to follow through. Good luck!

Get an education, and then go for your dreams...if it doesn't work out you'll always have your education to fall back on.
That said, the greatest risk is that I dive although I have asthma....
