If you were absolutely commited to starting a career as an instructor and you only had two options...

A) Bans on Koh Tao; http://www.scuba-pro-asia.com/career/col/english.html

or

B) Mermaids in Pattaya; http://www.learn-in-asia.com/

What would you do?

I think it depends on the type of life you are looking for. Pattaya is only about an hour and a half from Bangkok so it is a pretty developed city. As for Koh Tao, it is an island of Gulf of Siam so the overall environment is not as flooded with shopping malls and so on.....................

In the perspective of diving condition, Koh Tao would probably be the better choice as visibilities of dive site around Pattaya is rarely good. Koh Tao is a well-known dive destination for local divers too. In fact I got my PADI OW certified with Bans-Koh Tao.

On the other hand, if you are thinking or doing technical diving too, Mermaids in Pattaya might make a better alternative.

Hope this gives you some idea.

Thanks wunat;)

Actually I'd far prefer the small Island atmosphere and better diving at Bans. The thing is which do you think offers better value for money and which will better provide me with job opportunities at the end of it all.

Having studied and dived with Bans would you reccomend it.

I would pinch myself hard and shake and try to awaken from the dream. Or I'd just let it continue.

Why do you say it's a dream? This is my reality. I have to decide where i'm going to do an IDC package for 4-8 months, and those two look like my best options. I'd just like a little feed back from some of the knowledgeable people on this board.

BTW this place is great i've been reading posts on here for a while now and it has helped a lot.:D

How did these options come about?

Well, for a start, I'm limited to searching online. I want to go somewhere warm, where my hard earned cash will stretch out over the length of my stay. I wanted somewhere with unlimited diving included in the overall cost, and somewhere that's actually going to open doors for me at the end as far as helping secure a teaching job somewhere.

It was looking stongly like Mermaids was the winner for a while, but I discovered Bans while diving the board. Mermaids has a lot of positive comments especially about P.J. the course director/ owner. On the negative side i've heard a couple of comments that the boats are like cattle cars, with 40+, compared with the rest of the companies in the area. Also Pattaya sounds a little seedy for my taste.

Bans has the atmosphere i'd prefer, small island out of the way, great diving. However there is'nt any where near the information about it that I'd like.

Ideally, at the end of the day, I'd like to study somewhere that's going to have professional staff and first class teaching along with the opportunity to get as much diving done as I can while i'm there.

Don't want much do I.;)
